I'd say by the amount of people that listen to it. I'm pretty sure that more kids grew up listening to hiphop than house, but maybe I just think that because everyone I grew up around is into hiphopleyenda303 wrote:I'd say that's one way of measuring it's relative impact on pop culture which is what slanguage seemed to be getting at. In terms of the size of the actual genre I guess how many sub genres, sub-sub genres etc it umbrellas is one way of establishing how big that overarching genre would have to be. In that case I'd say house beats hip hop again. As for actually knowing the number of tracks produced in both genres and which might have more...I don't think anyone could even begin to claim to know. How would you define a genre's size?LumiNiscent wrote:so the size of a genre is defined by how many top 40 hits it influences ?leyenda303 wrote:Thanks for clarifying that mate, I've seen the light. wtf are you talking about? you do realize hip hop has had the biggest cultural impact musically for the last 30 years?
i can't believe what i'm reading
some people on this forum i swear down make me laugh...hip hop isn't some small niche genre you know![]()
Just because rappers and bling are involved does not make a track hip hop. I think if you took away house it would have a bigger impact than if you took away hip hop that's all. House has been incorporated into things like pop and 'urban music' etc to such an extent that people don't even realise it. More top 40 hits (which sadly is what defines pop culture) are house at their heart than hip hop.

Because no one besides leyenda303 (and earlier for one post Mr Hyde) is actually saying anything substantive and it's kind of frustrating. What's your opinion?incnic wrote:i dont see any point in this

Re: Mala....the next DJ Kool Herc?
Thanks, I'll go through these.
Anyways, I guess I'm done for now
That's not quite it though. Dubstep is already mainstream, what I'm saying is that it might have a rare chance to transcend that and become a multi-faceted genre much like Rock is. It's experimental nature pushes it there.fractal wrote:your "discussion" just seems to be about dubstep and the mainstream

have we not become a multifaceted genre? I would say we reached that goal a long time ago. dubstep means something different to most of the people on this board

Exactly, absolutely, YES.fractal wrote:have we not become a multifaceted genre? I would say we reached that goal a long time ago. dubstep means something different to most of the people on this board
The fact that Dubstep has enough diversity and has different meaning for everyone, much as rock does, but can still be though of as this cohesive genre of tons of different stuff is my point. It's a good thing, to me—something that dosen't happen to genres very often.

i would argue that all genres of music are multifaceted, it just depends on your perspective

I would agree that to even get to the stage of being refered to as a genre in its own right and not merely a sub genre of something else this has to be the casefractal wrote:i would argue that all genres of music are multifaceted, it just depends on your perspective
