Learning Guitar
Learning Guitar
do you consider the guitar a hard instrument to play? with 6 strings and about over 15 frets it looks a little overwhelming. I just started a few days ago (on acoustic since i can just take it anywhere it is slightly harder than an electric since it's size is larger/wider)and can do simple chords (only a few chords involving bar holding) like c,g,Am,a,d,Dm, Em, and a few more. what kind of troubles me is the picking i am trying to get the habit of using my fingers and not a pick
Re: Learning Guitar
Never liked using a pick myself. I don't consider the guitar that hard to play.. compared to let's say the violin.
I can play pretty decent but I never do nowadays. Looking back I should have went with piano, but I didn't know
I was going to do electronic music
Still pick up my pink Fender from time to time though haha

Re: Learning Guitar
how about a fretless guitar? and same here man i don't feel comfortable with a pick dunno why i started on the ukulele first which wasn't too long ago then a few days later i got a guitar/bongos/5piece drum. i don't know if i am naturally a drummer or not since i picked up 4/4 3/4 beats quickly within a few daysAxeD wrote:Never liked using a pick myself. Re: Learning Guitar
If you're up for putting in the years of practising every day, it is worth it.
Re: Learning Guitar
Just make sure you stick with the pain til you get callouses on your fingertips, makes it easier from then on! The way I learnt was to get a song that I knew inside out and just play the rhythm with muted strings 'til I had it down. After getting the rhythm I would add in a chord and play the whole song in that one chord 'til I was able to get in to a chord change. Built it up from there.
Re: Learning Guitar
Ah see that's the problem with electronic music producers, when a real instrument comes a long they are clueless on how to play it. Good thing I am proficient in Guitar, piano and drums. Good thing no one gives a shit too. Fuck musical instruments, who am I? where are we?

Re: Learning Guitar
Yeah it's hard at first because you have to stretch your fingers out and get used to weird finger positions. You're going to have a shit ton of calluses on your finger tips when you play acoustic. But after playing for so much they just disappear and never happens anymore.
I would recommend on using ulitmate-guitar.com for guitar tabs. It's the most famous/a shit ton of tabs for whatever song you can think of.
I would try learning these songs(my first songs). From Easy to Hard.
From First To Last - Emily http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrdfCtrUa44 Sonny Moore aka Skrillex. It's funny cuz this was the first song I learned when I was a freshmen in high school back in 2006. Now I'm doing dubstep. Been a big influence. He's playing guitar and singing x]
Atreyu - Ex's and Oh's http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-lGmSVexdw For electric guitar, do the lead. It's really easy and helps you learn hammer-ons.
Rise Against - Swing Life Away http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BblV6AQsd2s&ob=av2e Help to start out with Double finger picking.
3 Doors Down - Kryptonite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPU8OAjjS4k&ob=av3e Helps on picking on all the strings while doing chords
Jason Mraz - I'm Yours http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkHTsc9PU2A Different Style/Helps with rhythm/Chords
Sublime - Santeria http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEYN5w4T_aM&ob=av2e
Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ux6SlOE9Qk&ob=av3e Electric guitar.
Metallica - One http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WM8bTdBs-cw&ob=av2n Seems hard but it really isn't. Helps you learn to move up & down on a string doing hammer-ons. I didn't learn the whole song just the whole beginning/solo.
Creed - One Last Breath http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnkuBUAwfe0&ob=av3e Fucking beautiful song/So fun to play. I learned most of it but couldn't do all of it until a year later. Does double-picking with fingers and it's confusing as hell.
After a year of playing I learned this song. This song really helps with spreading your fingers and moving hella fast. Seriously I sucked ass and worked on this song for a month. Then I got it down! The solo I learned the beginning of then never went back to learn the whole thing. I still can't sweep to this day. I just need to learn it.
Lovehatehero - Amity http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qaUN3Xn3UU Electric guitar/fast pace movement/arpeggiaos or some shit.
Tutorial by the guitarist - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxyRAqQ68ZQ
As Blood Runs Black - In Dying Days http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdU_pT0KXSI&ob=av2n Hella fun to play. Easy to learn. Hammer-ons + moving up a down on one string a lot. THe whole song is using the top 3 strings. You gotta tune down though. Look for tabs.
Parkway Drive - Idols And Anchors http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tajPROM8wk some guy that inspired me. good ass cover. watch his others also. he has tabs for all the songs.
Bring Me The Horizon - Pray For Plagues http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWggPLXeOkU Shit gets hard Lol. Can almost do the whole song but the solo by the end gets me.
But yeah just search up tabs on the website. There are a bunch of songs I've learned of course but I forgot a bunch of them. Here's some that I remember that you can check out. What helps playing guitar is that it forces you to get into other types of music.

lol you like skrillexs shitty emo band omg lol hahahah rofl
Re: Learning Guitar
I put my social life on hold for like 2 years and became pretty good at guitar, 2 years later and I'm still at the same level cause I couldn't be arsed sitting down for 5 hours to learn the Stairway to Heaven solo. Guitar is a relatively easy instrument to learn tbh, thousands of written/video lessons online, you don't need to learn theory to play it and all you need to learn is three chords and you'll be able to play a shit load of songs.
But yeah I remember feeling like a badass when I could first play the back in black riff. Still chew on the hard skin on my fingers as well
Go to Ultimate-Guitar.com for lessons and tabs, and youtube for video lessons.
Oh and biggest piece of advice I can give you is to learn how to alternative pick straight away, don't be a fool like me and only learn it after a year of down picking, it's hard to break old habits.

Re: Learning Guitar
the undisputed da of the guitar. imagine whippin' this one out at a party.
my advice is the simple and the obvious: practice a lot. keep at it. its the only thing that will make you good and well rounded. keep learning new material and trying to write your own.

Re: Learning Guitar
It's one thing to be able to play the guitar, but the real beauty comes from jamming and being able to play with other people.
Re: Learning Guitar
lol i'm not this way though. picked up drums/percussion/ukulele/keyboard/mallets pretty quick(been playing drums/uke/keyboard for a few days now and i'm ready for the long haul), faster than any of my friends (and they are all brilliant musicians). i'm not some clueless little kid who just watches ni massive youtube tutorials i went to calarts for a bit took several percussion classes including music theory. i don't get how you can be so bias asserting such notions like that, there are plenty of electronic musicians who play instruments uh you heard of a keyboard? you have to at least know some basics on that to even produce.Alissio wrote:Ah see that's the problem with electronic music producers, when a real instrument comes a long they are clueless on how to play it. already started to develop this. can't feel the tip of my index/middle finger and slowly loosing feel on my ring finger. not gonna stop i know it will take a while to get fairly good at it but i am willing to practice/wait.catmartin wrote:Just make sure you stick with the pain til you get callouses on your fingertips, makes it easier from then on! i heard about this in a tutorial I had been watching and I had started with alternative picking as soon as I picked up the guitar since I started on ukulele i use to(still do) always strum up and down for chords so I just do that with my thumb/index finger and make it look like i'm holding a pick with my fingers.daeMTHAFKNkim wrote:Yeah i fucked up there too.
