broheads, where do YOU get your drum samples?

Post by RmoniK » Thu Dec 22, 2011 4:22 pm

I feel like i'm completely held back by
1) The lack of competence to spot a good sample in a bank of 500 samples
2) The lack of good samples in banks of 500 samples.

Isn't there some kind of collection of good samples? I mean, why do those famous sample creators always create like a thousand samples, knowing that 80 percent of them is rubbish. I get that quantity is kind of an important thing, but if they are bad then really, why do they bother.

The problem is, the reason why i only poop out a finished track once every 6 months is not because i don't have ideas, it's because when i start a track, and i need to do my drums, i'm at it for about 6 hours, then shutting down reason without saving because what i had was awful. And then i'm disgusted by producing for at least 3 days. Which happened today too.

I hate how, while watching masterclasses and stuff, you see those people doing stuff that you know, that you maybe even can do better than they can (yes, i'm talking about the funtcase masterclass), and then they whip out a drum sample that is sooo awesome while mentioning "yeah, it's a vengeance sample.". And he manages to make his tunes in no time. Even while losing time saying "generally" every 10 seconds. Same goes for pretty much every masterclass i've seen. Especially the rusko one. Ohyeah, just a snare and a clap and some whitenoise chilling together.=> awesomeness.

Things to try for sample selection;

1) You could spend some time going through your samples and listening to find which ones you like. The ones you like, move into a folder called Favourites > Kicks and save a copy in there. Do this for all your samples (it might take a while depending on how many you've got) and gradually you'll build up the Favourites folder with more and more good samples that you like, so they're all lumped together for future use.

2) For the snare example, spend some time doing sound design. Take your snare, your clap and your white noise and mess around with the layering/EQ/placement of them to create SUPERSNARE1.WAV. Once you have that, bounce it out into a seperate folder of sound design samples you've constructed yourself. Repeat to build up this collection too.

for drums, id say EQing helps the most.
dont rely on compression too much and for kicks be subtle with FX, EQ boost in the 100hz area or a bit lower.
with snares distort and clip them a lot and EQ boost them in the 200hz area and then layer it after with a few clean clap sounds and you will hopefully have a nice kick and a snare :)
dont go crazy with layering as it can wreck the sound + if your really having that much trouble then temporarily steal some drum sounds from any song you like and try to imitate it a little, just for reference. hope this helps!

I mostly synth mine now, it's much easier and much more flexible. Although I do agree that I have 20K kick drums and maybe 4 of them I like.

I got lucky, i got a sample pack just called garage samples, all the drums in it are really useful in one way or another, i only rarely use vengeance samples now

I do alot of bro-y tracks, and I like to sample from real drum hits. Somtimes, I use some vengeance or whatever, but not as often. A good pack for hard hitting [realistic] drum samples is the neptunian drums kit, although most of the kicks in that one sound more tribal than what's common in dubstep.
...in my opinion

Biggest breakthrough for me with drums was realizing that whats around it is generally more important. If you could solo out just the drums in a lot of tracks you'll notice that the drum hits are in a lot of cases pretty standard sounds, nothing special about them. Its like you shouldn't look for 'that perfectly crisp hat' just find a crisp one and eq it a bit to accentuate what you like about it. Do the same for Kicks and Snares and shakers e.t.c. Settle for less and you'll end up with more. I know it sounds a bit odd but people have commented on how crisp my drums are in my tunes and that is the philosophy i take. Its the act of trying to make stuff sound sick that actually makes them sound shit, tone WAYY back on the processing and just find shit that sits well together.

listen to as many tunes as you can and pay attention to the kick/snare. Its usually NEVER that cliche 100Hz Kick and 200Hz snare. The hits actually have a personal character (which is why sample packs have 90% shit samples, because the character you're looking for exists in about 10% of them, try a different 'flavour' for your drums and suddenly ALL the samples become viable.) that adds a good 80% of the psychoacoustics to the break than the hits adheering to some quazi valid structure (EQ 'here and here' e.t.c.).

I think its that newby quest for 'the perfect break' sound that actually inhibits them reaching a fleshed out groove in their drums. Its a fucking crap ton more important to develop character within your timbres and letting the context within which the drums sit add a lot of the flavour, than to try and create that clinical, cliche sound. Overprocessing to fuckery and ending up with a pile of mud.

Concentrate on the textures and the groove and let the drums develop themselves, let them take you where they're heading instead of trying to force something out of them that's not there.

Basically, listen to each hit as it is, not under the guise of it 'not' sounding like something else you're looking for. Experiment with how hits 'can' sound good together and try things you usually wouldn't.

If you're trying to choose the 'right' samples out of all of them, try to find the ones with the least unwanted overtones, and try to find ones that sit where you want them to frequency wise, will make it much easier later on in the EQ stages.

Haha no doubt IMO his music is some of the shittiest I've ever heard.
Yeah I use Logic and a lot of the producers on the masterclasses do too. I've gotten a lot of gems from them, I watch the ones where the producers don't use logic as well because just the ideas and techniques they use are very educational and interesting. My favorites are Reso, Icicle, Ctrl Z/Skism and the most recent one, probably my favorite, Subscape.
I really like Subscape.
Anyways, though I'm sure he's shit, I'd still be very interested in seeing the FuntCase one. Can someone gimme that link?
