A more interesting conversation might ask why you would pay so much attention to the movies hipsters watch... perhaps because you're insecure about your non-hipsterdom?
Do you.

Re: Fight Club
so anything with a cult (albeit large) following is now considered a part of the pointless label 'hipster'..?
Please shut the fuck up.
Fight Club is great, so are 2001 and Koyanisqaatsi. None of these films have a definite meaning that can be shared by everyone. None of these films can be summed up in one persons opinion.
What do YOU think the meaning behind Fight Club is?

to me it's a tongue in cheek look at anti-capitalism and how we are defined by the way in which we live. A guy decides he wants to define himself outside of the consumerist lifestyle he has been living for decades but goes too far and eventually loses track of himself. Simply put, his alter-ego runs wild with the freedom of no longer conforming to society.
It's such a rich complex film woven with mad levels of allegory that it's kind of hard to sum up but I feel those are the main themes.
Palahniuk always looks at what is considered 'normal' and whether people are happy within those confines, the film is pretty true to the tone of the book in terms of the main characters struggle with his normality versus what he could consider as happiness.
A few of the films you mentioned (like Clockwork Orange) could be considered transgressive art/fiction alongside Fight Club as they deal with themes like normality, finding one's place in the world and social conventions/expectations.
Perhaps if you were more accepting of these 'hipsters' they would feel more included, wouldn't need to watch all those weird hipster films to validate their own existance and might start enjoying regular films such as Die Hard 4.0 and The Transporter 3 which would be far more normal, and not confusing, and no-one would need to start a thread about it.

My housemate ruined the ending of Shawshank Redemption for her boyfriend a couple of months ago... we just sat there in stunned silence. Not...the...done...thing...
