Just a bass trap question

Post by invictus » Wed Dec 28, 2011 1:07 pm

How long should the bass traps be?
Up to the ceilling? Or 1m is enough?
I can't install them right by the floor but like 50cm higher, so the tips of bass traps would
be at 150cm.. is that enough?
Wanna talk about music, production etc?

Depends on the size of the room.

So the bass is already trapped :)

I have no idea, I'll ask around.

Your room has three dimensions though - how high is the ceiling?

I'd say make em as big as is possible without squeezing you out of the room. The smaller the room the more chance for standing modes, think about every corner too, not just the vertical ones where two walls meet, but also the horizontal where the wall meets the ceiling.

oh okay, I'll try, I might buy half of them now half some time later though as they are somewhat expensive ;/
what about the accoustic foam pads? (they're cheaper so I'm gonna buy like 10-15 of them)
I'm planning to buy these

now where should I put them ?
here's a paint sketch of my room :D

I was thinking about the wall behind my desk ( 2 pads behind the monitors ), the corner with the radiator,
and I also think I should cover most of the wall where my bed is, as it's pretty bare.
what about the door with the wall behind me?
what places should I focus on while putting up the accoustic foam? :)

Fill the corners in as best as you can, the more space between the trap and the wall the better. Essentially you want your bass trap to be thicker than 4inches and at least 4 inches off of the wall for it to be effective. If you only have one bass trap I would probably concentrate most on the back wall. But remember to have some space in between or your pretty much just turning it into a big mid range absorber. The ceiling is also very important but also proves to be most a bitch when installing, for me it has anyways, that is why I am doing without the cloud for now even though it is probably the most important acoustic treatment I could have.

For absorbers you have to look at your 'first reflection points'.
