Does that not apply to virtually everyone here?!
Yes it does, and that's why I don't judge anyone for downloading as long as they buy what they can afford to support the artists they love.

I haven't flat out pirated something I didn't own for a few years now.

So either you're lying or someone's fucking you over.
Yeah I was gonna say, are you sure you don't just have your iTunes ripping settings on 256kbps?
What settings should be used for higher than 256?

Yeah, I do. Like, a lot. But concerning dubstep I find it quite hard download illegally as it's not really that mainstream so there's not enough seeds or whatever. Mainly the dubstep in my iTunes are fabriclive CDs, mixes, and this fat off CD of like 3gb worth of music my friend made me. Also, I try to go to as many shows as I can so I still support the producer/label.
Also, I don't DJ and getting into vinyl is something I really can't afford, sounds fucking expensive.

Isn't that an argument for piracy? Almost everyone posting here has done a mix and uploaded it at some point, or played a radio show or DJ set- that is all piracy unless you got authorisation for each tune. "Unauthorized copying, reproduction, hiring, lending, public performance and broadcasting prohibited"

Someone hearing a tune through a free (usually unauthorised) source and therefore not buying the tune or not pirating the tune directly is better for the artist in what way?

Nice one, and damn! I just assumed iTunes would import at 320, now I've got a huge library of 256 :u:

This is somewhat of a grey area I will grant you that. However I think there is a fundamental difference between hearing tunes in the context of a mix as opposed to downloading them in full for free, and thus having the ability to use them in the same capacity as someone who has paid for that same music.

How about playing them out in a dj set? Even if the dj themself isn't getting paid, the venue and promoter are likely to be making money from door fees and drinks etc, essentially off the back of stolen music.

i'd rather have some people hearing my tune that might not have (if the DJ couldn't download it for free) than not have them hear it at all.
i didn't make the music to make any money, i made the music because it was fun doing it.

also i listen to shit on youtube for free all the time so that would make me a massive hypocrite.
