Biscuit wrote:I really don't see why you all have this big issue with what he said in that video. I'd imagine if I had to guess he's speaking to an American audience here and America is lacking cultural elements that are present in the UK. People naturally try to understand things within their cultural framework. Most people in the U.S. if you tried to reference UK Garage or something like El-B to explain what you're talking about they would have no idea what you're talking about. I think saying whatever he said, I don't remember the exact quote but the bit about dubstep being like slow heavy hip hop puts it in a cultural framework Americans can understand. He didn't say it IS slow hip hop or whatever, he just likened it to something a casual american listener will understand.
So because people are too dumb to understand something, then you should just lie to them and tell them something that is incorrect?? Which they will then go on to tell other people, who will also be incorrect. This sounds like the root of the problem tbh. Artists who people look up to, telling their fans factually incorrect information, who then go and tell other people these ''facts'' who, when told the truth, cant comprehend it because they were told something different to begin. If Bassnectar had told his fans that dubstep actually developed mainly out of Uk Garage with possible influences from dancehall, jungle and hip hop, why would this be so hard for people to understand?

but now i feel like i dont' know what i'm talking about cuz honestly i was only into hip hop, any form of rock and ROLL!!!!, then dub and reggae one-drop riddims til 3 years ago when i was recommended to check out dubstep in the form of bassnectar. i'm all off on the timeline and what i said earlier seems pretty out of line now that i read it again. happens to me a lot. my b. I'm American, and to me, biscuit's argument is spot on.

but my enthusiasm for bassnectar stands strong and i don't give a piss about what you music history buffs think of me. especially that dude who says "get off bassnectars nuts." your probably someone that thinks the more and more you listen to dubstep, the world might finally accept you for it. get off dsf for a second and focus your energy on meeting chicks or things of that nature (strip clubs don't count). thats generalizing the dsf but i feel like 80% of the shit i read on this forum nowadays is some kid, like less than 2 years old, trying to learn how to use fruity loops to sound like skrillex or trolling. which isn't too terrible since it brings more attention to dubstep (to me thats great, but i guess its still cool to be the first one to like something, and then hate it when you're buddies start liking it) from all over the world to one place where we can converse. but it kills the fun for the dudes that have been here for years and gotta filter through that shit to spark conversation on their own interests. those are the fellas that i respect. and i respect bassnectar...and biscuit. peace

Remove head from ass.

I don't like his music by the way. In fact, I think it's some of the worst I've heard. And they acted like total dicks a while (1-2 years?) a go on here as well (if anyone even remembers that).

I don't know a ton about the ska movement in the UK, but I do know that the Specials and the English Beat are 2 incredible ska bands that hail from there.

i don't care when its from. i just find that people that go out of there way to pull a genre of music down, in order to then associate with it a few years later, when its perhaps bigger, very interesting. especially in lieu of metal bands and other people PR'ing their way into it as well, once its a way to keep the agencies, bookings and $$$ going.

Well, I don't think anything in the video was particularly damning, especially in the context of the whole interview. He was just trying to explain the format which the music is made under his own terminology. He says steady beat, I say 4x4 or house beat, etc. He's probably drawing a parallel between "break beat" and jungle, too.

But even if it IS purely for PR, which I believe is moreso for the typographer than Lorin, what's the harm? He's a career musician, been churning out steady releases since '01, tours fucking non-stop all year, runs his own label... If he makes moves to capitalize on the growing popularity of the genre, he really is only doing his job, and a service to his associated acts.

But I see no reason for him to have to make PR moves. His gravitation towards the jump-up sound more with every release is doing more than enough PR for him.
