Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
what is compression, and how do i do it in fl studio 10

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
Compression is the squashing of a audio signal mainly to control peaks in the signal(audio file)The peak is the loudest part of any audio material and compression is used to control these. Also used for other things like making the quiet parts of a audio signal louder(gain).I would of thought fruity loops has a built in compressor but i use logic so i can't answer that for you.

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
You can either use the fruity compressor, or the fruity limiter (which has a compression setting, press comp). Personally I wouldn't recommend the fruity compressor, but whatever works works.

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
hey all, correct me if im wrong, you know when you listen to a tune on youtube the sub/low end of the mix has noise added from compression of file size, it kinda adds like a grainy texture to it. for some reason i kinda like it, martyn - broken for example.

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
digital format compression has nothing to do with sound compression, which can be achieved in the analog domain..
these are two different things. with the same name.
compression of audio signals thru an effect called a compressor (or intelligent volume automation if u may call it that way) also induces distortion, but not the same distortion then the youtube distortion...
utube compression is similar to say.. zipping a file

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
This thread has me scratching my head... This is just my two cents, but if you have a question that is "extremely embarrassing" to ask and is "basic", why don't you google it or search the forum? There are many resources on the web and compression has been discussed on this and other forums before. I did just that for months before I even registered here. I'm sure your questions can be answered faster if you do that too.
And on the difference between mp3 compression and dynamic range compression:
-The goal of mp3 compression is to reduce file sizes. The lower the bitrate, the lower the file size.
-The goal of dynamic range compression is to even out the volume of a signal. You can also use them to shape the transient/attack of a signal and the tail.

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
Why do we have a tunes for feedback wip and finished tunes thread.... Seems a little repetitive

Because that is what people asked for.

because some of these guys know exactly what they're doing, so you can chat to them directly and get useful tips and tricks specifically about your own problem (dedicated the genre we are all here for), in one big a thread made for beginners.Artie Fufkin wrote:This thread has me scratching my head... Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
u dont get his point.. hes saying that a generic, very basic question doesnt need a customized answer...
the best way for u to solve any of these is to read... but u know, i simply think its a FUN thread which reenforces spirit of support and sharing around here

+ in western cultures like ours, one could argue that there is a direct link between the judo-christian tradition of clerical forgiving thru confession of sins, leading towards feelings of forgiveness and self-acceptance... which means noobs could feel less noobish and more accepted when they post on here... but thats a little off track imo
its just lots of fun

Dubs forum is a waste for getting descent feedback.ehbrums1 wrote:Why do we have a tunes for feedback wip and finished tunes thread.... Seems a little repetitive
WIP thread is for finished tunes while the feedback thread is just asking for constructive critism on an unfinished track.
It works

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
I'm sure this has been answered a million times so....
Mixing on Headphones.
I have an M-Audio Fast Track Pro sound card, will that suffice as a headphone preamp or would I need another piece of gear to get high quality audio to my headphones?
Would imaging software help get mixes right? Would a really in depth technical knowledge of mixing combined with some imaging stuff help get my mixes better for speakers even without headphones?
Starting to get more interested in the engineering and really tech side of producing, I just don't like putting things together that don't sound exactly like I want them to.

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
I dunno, I use a fast track pro and K240 headphones. Works good, i dont use an imager. Try to listen to a lot of tunes in the headphones you are gonna use and refference the mix on several different system

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
whats the easiest way to give your drums/snyth/bassline a very slow gradual build up and finish with that sort of snappy echo ending to it, a great example is Caspas tune Fulham 2 Waterloo where the intro has a synth slowly building up until the drums cut and it breaks down into the drop, Caspa is well know for that technique i'd say!

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
automate volume of certain elements / low pass elements / reverb tails gradually getting slightly longer.

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
it`s all just automation, not hard really.TheDubEngine wrote:that sounds long winded? if ive understood lolbrettheaslewood wrote:automate volume of certain elements / low pass elements / reverb tails gradually getting slightly longer.
just copy the volume automation to the other channels and flip the reverb wet/dry so that the volume and reverb work off each other, as the volume rises so does the reverb tail.

Re: The extremely embarrasing basic question thread
or group the elements you want to automate and do the automation on the group once
