Loving Dubstep in America

I used to have a problem with finding a place that played good dubstep in NY but ever since I found Reconstrvct I've been sorted. Now my problem is finding friends that like my taste in music. I'd much rather have friends that listen to the same music as me than a place that plays my taste in music, because I could throw my own party that's not a problem.

Idk if anyone else in the nyc crew has this problem.

Hey, dsf. Maybe someone from Chicago can help me out with a question... what happened?

I live like 70 miles west of the city, and between 2007-09, went to a couple parties a month. Venues like Sonotheque, Lava (now defunct), Lura, Kinetic Playground, Sub T, etc., all had great events with excellent supporting locals and big name acts alike. Music varied from 2562 to Distance to Caspa, all kinds in between.

I know I'm out of the loop, big time, but it seems like the only dubstep-type events are at SmartBar, which still brings in high grade performances sometimes, and Congress and the Mid, which is for stuff like skrillex & rusko.

Apart from SmartBar, are there any spots pushing less tear-out type sounds these days? And when/why did the scene there peter out (or is it just for the obvious reasons that seem to be afflicting every city)?

I went to 1 show last year, to see Starkey up in Milwaukee. He was great, but it was like a rave. All E and candy kids and shit. Glowsticks. Is that going on in Chicago?

Edit: I did just check the events forum, and its cool that Matty G & 6Blocc are playing at Sub T (with mc Anti!), but I've seen them both a couple times each, so not enough draw to make me trek out to the city. Reso is playing, and he's had some great releases, but I've seen him too. The rest of the events were acts that I've never heard of (not really their fault), or stuff like zed's dead & kill the noise (shit I can't get into). So I guess there's still an odd "real" event (I do realize how dumb that sounds, just don't feel like articulating any further) going on at times, but is it all ravey and filled with highschool girls?

If anyone could please answer any of my questions, it'd be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, apologies for a possible thread derailment (not like the topic hasn't been discussed ad nauseum though). Thanks!

The crew that was doing most of the events at Lava disbanded. After Lava and Sonotheque closed there weren't a lot of venues doing dubstep nights (aside from Smart Bar), and right after those venues closed is when 'brostep' took off and clubs / venues that had been usually promoting electro etc jumped on the dubstep bandwagon. I can't say much about it, but the guys who were doing the dubstep nights at Smart Bar wanted to do it on the weekends when this shit was really starting to take off back around 2009. SB wanted to keep weekends techno/house and sort of missed that boat. On two separate weekends SB brought in Rusko and Skream and did incredibly well. They never capitalized on it. IDK where The Mid came from, but I hate that place. It feels like it's full of 18 year olds who base their 'clubbing' experience on what they see on MTV. No vibes.

Anyway, now you have promoters who used to book all that shit booking what they consider 'dubstep' and, to the majority of people who attend those shows, that IS what dubstep is. But it isn't to me.

Smart Bar is doing a future bass monthly, we got Pearson Sound on Thursday, which is nice. Me and some others have started doing monthly loft parties to bring this shit up from the underground. So there are still some of us pushing the sound in Chicago.

And in answer to your question, yes, the vast majority of 'dubstep' events in this city are filled with pilled up kids, as they associate 'dubstep' with drugs and stupid clothes.

If your in New York and your having trouble finding shows to suit your taste then look harder because they are everywhere. Support the shows more and you'll see more of the artists you like.

Cotti/Mensah/Take/Roommate/Bakir/Sub Swara to name a few have all played in the last month or so.

NYC is mad SPOILT for bass music, from monday to sunday with all styles, some are more popular than others but that's the way of the world.

Explore a bit more and you might find you like it

Thanks a lot for the update and info! Sad to hear about some of the good joints shutting down, but at least you got smartbar and those loft parties (often the most fun). I went to those nights at sb with rusko & skream, both were good. My friend that I tag-teamed with at a few parties in my area plays there sometimes, dude who goes by Hindsight. I guess I gotta get out more, I just wanna avoid the bro-style events. And moreso, the crowd that accompanies that scene. Thnx again.

Seriously? I'm definitely driving down there this weekend if theres anything on. I've lived in ohio for over 9 months and have yet to visit cincinnati. I just figured detroit was the closest city that had anything worth traveling for.

Things must have changed since i lived in Ohio because when I lived Akron Cleveland and Pittsburgh was bumpin Cinci not so much.

i got to see Mala @ Cielo here in NY last July i think. totally wicked. François K did an amazing set after Mala too. François played some future jungle hybrid that drove me into hyperdrive!
