Re: Wikipedia switching off for 24 hours on wednesday
Do you think they could also find the time to turn off YouTube for 24hrs?

I was literally thinking yesterday how much harder uni would have been without wikipedia. It provides such an easy introduction for any topic as well as being great for quickly looking up tangents that you don't understand or need to know. Dunno how people passed without itwormcode wrote:Surely he just meant do proper research. Using one site/ book/source for something isn't research. He probably gets loads of papers copied right from wiki., that's normal these days Wiki's getting better, but there's still lots of opinions and unsourced claims, and also downright defacements. It should be another source, not THE source. It's never good when everyone gets the same info from the same place.[citation needed]Lichee wrote:I find this hilarious, my English teacher always said never ever use Wikipedia, use anything but. So he was saying use a website that has little to no published sourcing, written by one opinionated person and not moderated, instead of a clearly sourced article written and edited by numerous people that is moderated of opinions and inaccuracies as well as possible - all with no advertising for free.wormcode wrote:Should be a good wake up call to the wiki generation as well. Too many people rely on it, and there's lots of BS on it too.

So is it just Wiki and Reddit that are protesting?
isnt there some sort of petition to be signing?
isnt there anything we non-website owning public can be doing?

i don't even know what the point of the blackout was, i just heard they were going to blackout for 24hours.AllNightDayDream wrote:brettheaslewood wrote:currently browsing wikipedia! :O :O new their blackout would be a fail, it's pathetic.![]()

now had i got a 404 it'd be a different story.
but no, they've made themselves seen like they're the big company standing up for something, when all they have done is a put a picture banner to appear upon clicking on their links.
it's a cheap trick, which still allows them to generate traffic - the picture means any dumb tnuc will fall for it and be like 'AWWWWWHHHH IM GONNA DONATE MONEY TO WIKI FOR BEING SO KIND'
wish i had some idea of what they're protesting for, but im tired and moody this morning, if i read up about it i'll get into more of a tangent. sorry.

It provides you with the gist of what they are protesting, an egregious bill that would undoubtedly affect Wikipedia directly should it pass. Once you type a zip code it redirects you so you can contact your congressman. Don't know why you're so snide about it. If you know nothing of the issue, why comment?brettheaslewood wrote:i don't even know what the point of the blackout was, i just heard they were going to blackout for 24hours.AllNightDayDream wrote:brettheaslewood wrote:currently browsing wikipedia! :O :O new their blackout would be a fail, it's pathetic.![]()

Re: Wikipedia switching off for 24 hours on wednesday
Brett - it's campaigning against laws that will effectively hold Wikipedia legally responsible in the US for all the information they host, no matter who submitted it. If someone on the other side of the world manages to upload child porn, the owner of Wikipedia goes to prison. That could mean they have to stop allowing free submissions... could affect all sorts of sites that allow user-generated content including forums like this, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter.. well, anything you can submit free text or images to. This is actually one of the more important fights the Internet has had to deal with and one day without Wikipedia is an incredibly small price to pay for raising some awareness... seeing as nobody seems to have a clue what this is about, it's obviously pretty necessary; even though it's an American law the global nature of the Internet means it'll affect all of us - if sites are scared of getting sued in the US they'll have to curb operations/freedoms everywhere.
