Try it. Producing is a lot more fun and I find you learn more when you not directly copying someone's style or bass techniques.

I do a weekly dig around on Soundcloud and there are some many people on there that sound just like each other. So many seem to be in the mind frame of if "that works for him, I'm gunna do that too", works. Well, when there is 20 producers all sounding like like versions of each other, it doesn't.

Music and art is all about being an individual. It's your music. Your art. Why would you want to sound like the other guy? Make the effort to experiment, to work outside the box and maybe even make other music. Even if it's just for your own fun and production education. There is a lot more to making music than dubstep and trying to make an "awesome drop" or the the next "filthy bass". I understand there's a basic formula to making a particular genre but you don't have to stick so rigidly to it. It's a shame that so many new producers are seemingly obsessed with getting themselves to sound like producer A or B. They've beaten you to that sound, it's theirs. Maybe that's why they got signed in the first place but it also means that this is maybe why you won't get signed too.

Try a little harder. To educate yourself a bit more and to develop your own sound, which in turn will help you in the long run.

Nicely said, but there are so many people who aren't in music production because they thoroughly enjoy it, but because they want to be the next cool man, so that is something I think will only increase depending on popularity of EDM.

You guys have no idea how much time i spend sweating my music because its sounds this way or that way or like this guy or that guy blah blah. I think about this a lot. Write what you want to to be happy about your music and if its any good people will let you know. I guess there is a fine line between writing within a genre and ripping somebody off. Some genres are really hard to STAND OUT in right now no matter how good your tracks are. If you want to stand out you have to do things your own way. I just really started digging deep into the Toasty stuff and that guy was an OG Dupstep producer who really stood out in his field. Maybe the most unique within early Dubstep framework. I mean that shit is humbling its so good. All because of style. I don't produce Dubstep tracks but that guy makes me want to lol

This is good advice, but to a point. I mean, firstly you have to have the skill to pull off your own sound without it sounding like crap. And secondly, whats wrong with learning a few popular bass techniques or drum patterns? You can then add your own twist to it once your skill is there.

Also, if you're making a certain genre, then it should really sound a bit like that genre. Dubstep should be really 140 ish, and for most people its all about the bass.

But yeah, i agree i've heard a lot of similar sounding tunes lately. Either the ones with the distinctive sound of massive overpowering them, or real minimal ones that don't go anywhere. My thoughts are that people need to listen to a wider range of music and then go back to their chosen genre.

While agree with the sentiment, often emulation is the best form of education. Every guitar player gets good by copying the techniques of his heroes, and EDM production is no different. A lot of people are still learning, and it's the best way to do that IMO. Your own style develops over time as you learn more and more. Starting off from day one trying to be completely original is a pretty tall order for most people. That being said, there does come a point where you need to move past that if you want to avoid being just another carbon copy producer.
