Ableton Live EQ8 Automation Workflow

Post by Methadose » Sun Jan 29, 2012 6:56 pm

I am trying to automate various EQ 8 parameters over time. I am capable of setting up automation lanes for these parameters and editing frequency, resonance, and gain values in these lanes.

Where I am having problems is workflow. I need to adjust these parameters at certain points and I need at least four of the eight available curves and almost all three of their respective parameters to hit specific points at the same time. It is taking me far too long to adjust each of these by hand and I am wondering if there is an easier way. Perhaps a way to enter a specific value on the automation point, or maybe even copying/pasting (or fading between sets of) various values from the vowel preset spectrum that I am trying to emulate with this automation. I noticed that you can view current parameter values when you jog through your track, I'm hoping that there is a more precise and faster way of editing points, maybe even multiple points at once.

I am completely new to Live but am picking it up relatively quickly as it is quite intuitive and it seems to urge the user to tweak and automate nearly everything which I like. There are just certain aspects, like shortcuts, workflow techniques, things like this that I am still getting used to.

Thanks for any help.

I would also like to preemptively point out that I am not trying to 'make a SKRILLEX bass' I am just interested in this technique as it is something I haven't come across before. I also think that it could be applied to other types of sounds for interesting results, and this is what I ultimately hope to achieve.

you know there is formant EQ presets in there right?

i dont really understand your question but you could always highlight where you did automations, copy it, and paste it wherever you want it again.

If i've right understood your problem, you should try create instruments racks with multiple chain of the same synth / sample, and add a different EQ on it. Then select the chains a create a maccro with the chan selector ( selectah ! ). Another way to do it is to create a AER, choose the depth of your automations on the map mode. And you can do multiple AER controlling each others.

I think my english is way too bad to explain you in depth how to do that, i just can give you ways to explore. You should check some tuts on youtube about that, i think you'll find your answer.

Sorry again for my english :s
Sorry for my crappy english, not my main language ;)

I've seen tutorials about Skrillex bass using those EQ's but I seriously doubt he has all that work. It's a workflow killer.

Don't Vowel Filters like WOW do exactly the same as that, but automated? I'm pretty sure there are free alternatives as well.

@Methadose: Look into purchasing this plugin >> http://www.cableguys.de/midi-shaper.html

May make your life easier and cut workflow in half.

However... It may double it... hahaha :6:

Thanks for the responses, I will look into the suggestions here and see if I can find an easier way of doing this.

take the channel with your EQ8, select "group instrument."

then, macro your freq/res/etc to the 8 soft knobs that appear when you group in ableton. then you can just automate the soft-knobs.

doing it this way, you can map multiple parameters to one knob. from there, you can set the ranges of each individual parameter. so for example, map freq1, freq2, and res2 to ONE macro knob. then, you can set the ranges of each parameter and the direction.

for example, setting the min value for freq1 to 1, and the max value to 127. setting freq2 to min value 127, max value 1. now, as you sweep your macro knob to the right, freq1 will increase, while freq 2 will decrease, cross-fading the EQ almost.
