Vengeance Dubstep Preset packs for Massive - opinions?

Post by OzoneJunkie » Thu Feb 23, 2012 9:45 pm

I see Vengeance has 3 dubstep preset packs for Massive. The demo tracks sound...uhm.. ok I guess.

Anyone have any opinions about them? I don't think I'd use them straight up, either tweaked, or as a tool to learn more about Massive...

Yeah, I do want to do my own design. But sometimes I think deconstructing existing presets, when they're good presets helps.

Are the Vengeance ones any good??

No, I would recommend BHk's patches if you want genre specific presets. Bhksamples.com

Honestly I haven't seen a single sample pack that has ANY decent dubstep sounds in it. Most of the sounds that I make are resampled with numerous effects so that by the time they're finished, they only slightly resemble the original sound. There's nothing wrong with watching some tutorials but buying those preset packs is just a waste of money IMO. Read the manual to the synth you're using. If it's NI's Massive, their manual is really well done and helped me learn a lot of things about the synth. Also, check out Simon Cain's "how to make a noise". It's chock full of all sorts of info on sound synthesis and it's free in PDF form.

I agree synthesis knowledge is important, but there's nothing wrong with using presets. So many legendary tracks were created thanks to presets. Too many 80s hits to list were made from Emulator preset disks, and guys like Liam Howlett took advantage of every sound ROM they could get their hands on.

I have been using FM synthesis for some time now with Rhino 2 and I can quite comfortably say that when I bought the Daniel Maurer preset packs, grainfield, textures, etc. I realized how much more I can do.

Even if a preset is a way for you to realize the synth is more powerful than you thought, then soo be it.

Not a fan of them myself (could never find a sound that did it for me)

However if you're new to synthesis and want to know how to get these sort of sounds then this could be used as a good learning tool for picking apart the presets and finding out what makes them tick ;-)

I've heard Vengeance is pretty good, but I guess it depends what sound your going for... I'd imagine most of them would be brostep sounds and if your getting the pack just to see how its done then go for it. I cant talk for you but I have an easier time learning something by physically seeing and working with it, I cant sit down and read a manual to save my life.

I like getting preset packs, and then deconstructing/analyzing them

i think its dumb to never use or look at presets, you can learn a lot from them

obv sound design is important, but when you are learning and self-teaching, might as well use everything you have at your disposal imo

They do sound brostep-ish - that's ok though, I can get down with that. Still though, going to pass on them.

Honestly though, I'm thinking of taking a different approach. I've created my own patches before, but out of context - meaning not for a particular track. And the patches I make in this way - I find them boring. Some synth presets inspire me to play something and build into a track. However, with Dubstep sounds I find, for me at least, not inspiring on their own. Even lead patches w/o context tend to be uninspiring for me.

I need context, and therefore am going to take a different approach in making presets - having a melody present within a track already, and then constructing a patch from there.

Part of this is figuring out what's the best workflow for me. Have tried approaches that other people use, and all I get is garbage. I need to use and refine my workflow, but in context of dubstep (I've typically written dark ambient/orchestral stuff in the past).

Sorry to sidetrack a bit... just braindumping...

massive is easy enough to use to make good sounds in minutes, those vengeance presets were either rushed or done by a noob. seriously.
