ye what i thoughtNW DUBAHOLIC wrote:I had the same thing happen. I read about it and apparently that means you selected to not have Google keep your web history in the first place. i clicked no thanks
but thats different to what the instructions said
either way im not bothered about google knowing what i search for, there's nothing incriminating in there but i'd still like to just be in control of it so haveidunitwrong or what?
glad to know we were on the ball early

bing is doing the exact same thing. just understand that these new terms means that google are making profiles about you via your IP. this is because they use the same systems that telemarketers do , for adsense. they're databasing ip's so they can correlate your postal code with IP's and then target ad's based on that information towards you. they can also sell that information to potential advertisers. so for example, if you google search something in a poor area, you get one kind of google ad, and a rich area, something totally different. furthermore, if you use gmail, blogger, YT, g+ and are signed into any of those services, that browser, and anything you do on it, is being recorded like a tape recorder. your personal information they can't touch, but where you go on the internet, how long, your friends/their friends, where you are, etc, thats all fair game now. via gmail, they know who all your friends are too. if you use google chrome, don't count on anything being private on there, whatsoever.
this is why i said a few months back, use different browsers for different things, that way google isn't making loads of money off you.
an example :
opera : Facebook, gmail, fourssq, twitter and nothing else. don't even browse on it.
firefox : everything else (browsing, emails, etc) banking, paying bills, shopping, etc.
basically, do all social media on one browser. google don't want you separating everything out. probably 80% of the people don't care about this, and thats why Fb & G have empires. i have nothing to hide, but this notion that my internet habits are being used to make them money, is just too much of a pisstake to swallow. f that.
last week, wired mag just busted G, trying to circumvent the cookie system on safari. this is so they can get all the data that people are using on safari via iPads & iPhones. apple have a policy about 3rd party privacy that doesn't allow companies to mine data, unless they're signed into a browser. basically, google is pissed because all that revenue that could be there for them on safari iPhone, is only there if people download their G apps to the iPhone. they were trying to backdoor that, and someone (probably apple themselves) tipped off wired.

G are trying to go after any money they can, as the Fed are auditing them for the next 20 yrs on their privacy policy, so their playing field is really tight.

Yeah indeed. I also use chrome and firefox for seperate things.
Seriously though, I fucking hate it when I've googled a certain pair of sneakers or turntables or whatever and then suddenly every fucking website I go to coincidentally has ads about these exact same things... So it's already full on happening.

When I was a young lad, living at home, I decided saving my history was just going to come back and bite me in the ass. I have never looked back since.

While part of me thinks this is all a bit evil empire, part of me thinks that it's a bit much to be moaning about targetted ads when they provide what is (IMO) the best and most wide reaching search engine, various other tools, youtube, blogger etc. which I use everyday all without asking for a penny (and I have AdBlock Plus anyway, so I don't see any ads).
I'm usually pretty hot on taking info that doesn't need to be taken (DNA database, etc.) but I find it hard to be bothered over google knowing that I go on facebook, DSF and like music. I know I'll probably get some stick about that, but whatever.

gmail demands that i give them my cell phone number every time i log in. I refuse every time, and they prompt me with 3 "are you sure?"'s every time. Because if i lost my password, they'd have no way of retrieving my account! Well, fuck that. I don't want to give my cell phone number and i'm really sick of them asking for it. I hate this world

Unless you're busy searching for pictures of young boys, why would you care?

It didn't even seem to have all of my search history included but to be honest I'm not that bothered. If ads show up that are slightly related to what I'm interested in then I guess that's slightly better, but to be honest I'm just used to tuning them out.

Checked all of my gmail accounts and none of them had history enabled, there was only an option to turn it on. They are all many years old by now. I never stay logged into anything unless I'm using it, and only use google accounts for email. DSF is one of only 2 or 3 sites I have ads turned on at anyway.
On new accounts it's enabled by default, but from what I have been reading, this is not new at all. They just changed how they explain it. It started in 2005 or so apparently.
Also if you guys are very concerned with tracking, check out http://www.donttrack.us for recommendations on software to install and different search engine. Also http://www.ixquick.com is a nice private search engine.
