This song has it a lot. It's like it fades in after every beat, hard to explain. Like when you'd up the attack knob on a VST (only it's not that easy).
I'm fairly new to making stuff from scratch and not using presets

and I can't seem to get that sort of sound.
I've tried tutorials but can't seem to find that particular sound to make.
I have the sound in my head, and humming it along to my projects. Yet can't make that godamn sound!
I use NI Massive and NeXus mostly, if that helps lol
My newest track, a great remix to Castles In The Sky by Ian Van Dahl.

That's most likely to be either sidechain compression on the synth or lfo on the volume knob.

How do side-chain compress?
My cousin was talking about something like that, but he uses Ableton and said it's impossible in FL Studio (which is what I use

)

It's more to it than just chaining mixer channels (in FL Studio anyway). It's basically the 'in and out' sound I'm looking for, you'd need something to control it via automation I believe. Those threads really didn't get into that kinda stuff.

just sidechain it with midi notes / mute the source. Those threads get into the method that you are looking to shape your sound.

Check it out. I use side chaining via the Fruity Limiter quite often to control bass sounds like you are talking about.

im sorry but your cousin doesnt know what he is talking about, all DAWs can do what the other one does. To sidechain in FL use the limiters built in sidechain, or use the fruity peak controller.
YOUTUBE it, and you will get 1million and 1 ways on how to sidechain in FL dude.

fl studio is one of the best DAW for sidechaining IMO, you can sidechain ANY parameter by using the peak controller.
search for a guide on the peak controller.

Sidechaining is just an easy way to automate the volume on a sound. You could use host automation in the daw, volume automation via an lfo on the synth, envelopes on the synth, vst's like camel phat, cableguys volume shaper etc. Lots of ways to do this.

But his cuz said he can't do it in FL!
Anyway, i'll have a listen to the specific example when i get home, but unsynced ramps and saws should give you pretty much any In and out Bro bassline you can think of. Remember that in massive you can have the automation reversed too, drag down instead of up when setting the range of the LFO/Performer on the Cutoff or whatever, and it can create some unexpected sounds.

Thanks for the help everyone! And I'll have to check out that link you posted with the Limiter. From what you guys say, the Limiter seems to be the best way to control it.
And idk, my cousin seems like an Ableton fanboy. Says it's more challenging so that means you can make better stuff.

I would use compression like everyones saying. A nice effect on syths to give an in and out effect is use compression. Let it peak at bar 1 and 4, ramp down at 2 and up at 3. Longer attack on your operator, that would give a building up effect. Maybe through a band filter on and have your LFO modulate using a Saw up wave that repeats ever 4 bars. That would give you a nice platform to build bass around. I like to drop out the bass 1/2 a bar before 4 bar loop ends. Give you some anticipation for a drop.
Sorry if im unclear.

The bassline is definitely sidechained, but I think it's a bit more than that. I think to really give that presence of a "swell" in the sound, automate a filter envelope with a long attack and little to no sustain on the envelope parameters.

Yeah guys I figured it out

It's pretty easy lol I use the Fruity Peak Controller, it's so much simpler than the other ways. You can't exactly do as much customizing to it, but it gets the job done and with added FX, I could get the sound I want haha
Thanks for the help!

There are numerous tutorials on how to do this.

If for some reason that link doesn't work, just search youtube with the words:
