DJing with a click track.

Post by howzer » Thu Mar 01, 2012 2:51 pm

Anyone tried it?

I did the other day, I didn't mind it... was wondering if anyone else has tried it?
Obviously I mean a click in a monitor send or a spare channel on your mixer... not FOH!

What? Why would you want to do that?

yeah i don't DJ, but the couple times i've messed around on decks, the percussion in tracks was plenty to keep my place. and i wouldn't want a third tempo-dependent signal to sync up with... two is enough for me, just one track against the other
having a third benchmark is unnecessary and would prob screw me up

and i'd prob end up blasting the click through the system cuz i'm rubbish XD

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

hhahahah exactly the response i thought it was gonna get...

I know its weird... I only tried it for the fun of it. like.... if you know the click is in time with the track currently spinning... you wont need to cue it to beat match... clicks are very easy to beat match to... im not retarded i swear... i just like trying new and weird shit....

Nope, that does sound a bit retarded IMO - why would you need to beatmatch something (or rather, no beatmatch it) if it's not actually getting played in the mix?

of course it is, but if your track begins to drift, or if you wanna pitch shift it for an incoming mix, then you gotta worry about your click being off.. or mute it or shift it accordingly...
I guess it depends on what is generating the click noise and what it is slaved to
well obviously i'm no dj, so haha... u can ignore me

Plus won't using the click mean that entire mix is at the same tempo as the click? Fuck me, that would be boring as hell.

not beat match the song being played... you know when you're cueing in your next track... you sometimes cue your current track into your headphones so you can make sure the beats are aligned before fading the next track in? either for a mash up or track change? I just thought if you stuck to a click.. you'd just need the click in the headphones. i'm not defending it... i was just curious to see whether others had tried it

If I want to beatmatch a tune in my headphones before bringing it into the mix, I'll use the track that is currently playing as the point of reference.

of course... as would any DJ... I just came across a situation where i was having to drop a tune in where there was no beat just a voice that wasnt in time with anything.

fast forward to 3:54... this is where a click would have been nice.

EDIT: watch til about 4:43

Beatless tracks still have a tempo to them

yes but without a beat it is difficult to count beats with 100% accuracy

You need to practice more.

nah, "tetris" has no mixing period and i only had 2 cdj's set up... so i couldnt have cue'd it up that early as it still had previous track loaded in

and wub... of course i need to practice more... im always practicing!!! but i used to play percussion in a massive orchestra and i used to be a drum teacher... counting and keeping beat isnt the hard part....

this argument is silly, as i said, i only tried it once... and as you can see in the video... i can keep time and count measures fine without a click
