First monitors suggestions

Yo,

I'm relatively new to production (3 months ish) but I want to invest in some monitors.

I'm stuck between the cheap Behringer ms40's

or the more expensive but reputable JRJ RP5 RoKit's.

I don't make wobbly dubstep, so I'm not all about massive sub. More into house/garage/future-garage, I.e no skrillex bollocks.

Can anyone who owns either of these give me an honest opinion? Would it just be worth splashing out to save me buying new ones in the future?

Yeah because Loefah is all about those highs man, check out that 22khz bassah, fuck low end dubstep! jokes aside, you will need subs for every kind of EDM. The rokits are a solid suggestion. Have a look at yamaha's hs50, pretty flat response too. I think you'd be replacing that ms40 way too soon.

Secondhand is good as you can get higher end older monitors at entry level prices. I've always had good luck purchasing second hand gear, from monitors to analogue synths. Audiogeeks tend to take very good care of their equipment.

Check out Yamaha, the HS80 if your room is big enough, but the HS50 is good too though you may or may not need to add a dedicated sub depending on taste.

The Rokits are okay, not horrible but I've never been a fan of them besides the G2 with 8 inch driver.

Mackie MR5 or MR8 are excellent as well as the older Tapco S5 and S8 which are the MR precursor. You might also be able to find Mackie HR626 for a decent price if you look hard.

I'm a big fan of Event, the ASP and TR series are excellent.

Fostex are known for good quality too, and I've heard good things about Tannoy Reveals, but not used them.

I didn't see your budget, but I'm assuming the cheaper the better. Those are all active nearfields which are good and can be found secondhand for low cost.

Go visit a local shop and listen to both makes. Of course, there is definitely an important set of criteria when looking at monitors, but once you've narrowed it down to a few choices, its time to actually test drive potential buys with your own mix reference discs. Usually the final deciding factor is personal preference.

DM:^ i say go mackie for pimp factor. not too mention the yamahas imo have fatiguing highs (that in combination with a 5 inch woofer is going to be weird, no lows, and ear piercing highs). they sound pretty bland as well. sort of a good thing in a sense, but id prefer the mackies. thats only my opinion though so you have to make the decision yourself.

@attichuh i have heard them both the reason i cant decide is whether i should pay $100 more for the yamahas (read below for decision)
@eat bass i agree 100% the mackies are warmer (not as flat) which is good because they will be my main audio source. and i have decided to get the mackies. thanks for the advice both of you!

and for the maker of this thread i say you should get the mackies or yamahas both sound way better than the rockits.
