Slime is always at the forefront of finding amazing new creativity from around the world. Back to the front of last year when Archie Pelago's debut EP dropped for the label, we were presented with a remix of their track 'Hej Otto' that wasn't only game-changing; for us, it was life-changing. The producer behind this incredible reconstruction was California based artist, Eyelove.

From that point, an ambitious project was devised that would culminate in his debut EP - a song cycle of five pieces. Deeper in tone than anything previously released on the label, this marks a new direction for us and a clear statement of intent from the artist that music from the heart can heal those open to love. Extrapolating the core elements of dubstep and twisting them into brand new forms, Eyelove's music is in turn both uplifting and utterly redemptive.

'Gem' begins the journey with a poly-rhythmic sequence of ascending tones entwined with tribal drum patterns. Atmospheric guitar melodies soar in to provide form before the rhythm shifts into overdrive with energetic beats, rolling through the ethereal deep into 'Mali'. Harmonics chime across the gossamer surface of the melody as crisp summer colour flows through the song, an ecstatic arpeggio of choral cluster lifts up into 'Mysticism'. The title song flows through a monsoon of rain-soaked ambience and clipped beats before the beguiling guitar melody drifts into consciousness and elevates the spirit. The sky opens up in 'Lapis Lazuli', the calm after the storm. Drenched under the canopy of the lush amazonian rainforest, native chanting guides us further upward and inward. 'Prism' brings the healing cycle back to the start, a pulsating heartbeat of a drum pattern crystalizing infinitely within a radiant fractal of sound floating as a feather back down to the earth---a truly enlightening experience.

NYC trio Archie Pelago contribute a stunning live interpretation of 'Lapis Lazuli', with a playful array of stuttering percussion that jumps from dubstep to garage to house and back again filtering around a sensual saxophone solo and reversed guitar chords. Alpha Pup artist, Virtual Boy, appears on the release with an epic booty-shaking take on 'Mysticism'. Cromie also comes correct with an inspired essay into 'Mysticism' that turns the blissful original into a gorgeous deep house odyssey of uplifting keys and soulful vocals.

Another awesome review of this EP thanks to Below The Line:

http://www.belowthelinetv.co.uk/article/141/
Eyelove. Pretty obscure name for a producer/dj right? My thoughts exactly. And I'm not saying its a bad thing at all. In fact, it is the opposite. The name is one of the things that made me want to check him out. The 2nd reason being, he is the latest signing to Slime Recordings, who are no newbies on bringing us the finest in forward thinking bass music, having bought us the joys of Submerse, Resketch and Archie Pelago to name a few. The third reason being, his have dubbed him the next Phaeleh. Also, the funny thing is, I actually came across this producer after Phaeleh posted this on his facebook himself.

Quite a bold statement, I pondered to myself. Then I listened to the EP and it all became clear.

Atmospheric pads, dreamy soundscapes, lush guitar licks, a gentle sub which acts like a cool summer breeze. Delicate drum sequences scattered with plenty of percussion. You can imagine this being made in Bristol, or even played in a set on sunday on the beach at Outlook. But, the final shocker is...he is from America. Now, I am not dissing the USA, they have bought us some incredible artists. But to hear something this ethereal in (what some would say is) Dubstep, you wouldn't expect it from our friends across the pond.

The whole EP sounds like summer. It is absolutely beautiful, forward thinking and very original.

You can cop the EP via Slime on 19th March

For now, enjoy the previews.

PS Don't sleep on the Archie Pelago remix of Eyelove's Lapiz Lazuli...

Another day another awesome review for this EP:

http://igloomag.com/reviews/eyelove-mysticism-ep-slime
Awash with floaty processed guitars and trance inducing washes of electronic ambience, the tracks are downtempo, laid back and deep with an air of reserved technical accomplishment in the production stakes.

Eyelove 'Mysticism EP'

EYELOVE Not the usual thing you might expect from Slime, a label generally associated with the business end of the DJ market with releases from Phaelah, Materia and [Sic] to name a few under its belt. This release sails off to much more contemplative, adventurous and considered waters however. Awash with floaty processed guitars and trance inducing washes of electronic ambience, the tracks are downtempo, laid back and deep with an air of reserved technical accomplishment in the production stakes. It really reminds me of the Kid 606 album ‘PS I Love You’, which, after the sonic paint stripper that was ‘Down With The Scene’ was a display of maturity and reservation. Did I mention that it is deep? It’s deep! There are some bass frequencies in there that are outstanding.

Eyelove is a Californian artist who, from his biog seems to be something of a child of the universe, abounding as it is with celestial references and general karmic goodwill. Apparently he has been known to burn sage during his live performances, providing the audience with an extra sensory experience. All that on top of the love vibrations he brings! It sort of makes sense when you listen to the EP, there is a bit of a ‘universal love and positive vibration’’vibe to it. Don’t get me wrong, this is not some wishy washy new-age whale music or anything like that. In fact, it is extremely well produced, clearly a lot of time and thought has gone into the making of this EP. It sounds polished, everything has a glistening veneer to it. Although there are some pretty hefty bass tones in this EP, I don’t think Eyelove really fits into the whole Bass Music genre. It’s certainly not dance floor fodder, more like watching the sunrise over the sea. Or whatever touching moment you’d care to bring to mind.

There are elements of the mid ’90s Balearic sound in Mysticism, if I can say that without sounding too deprecating. A slowed down 4/4 beat with great washes of glossy synth swirls and fizzing chords and maybe a slightly hint of an ’80’s vibe occasionally. Lots of guitar lines and gentle licks also abound. In fact, the whole EP is quite gentle.

My favourite track is actually the remix of “Lapis Lazuli” by the New York trio Archie Pelago. They’ve chopped up bits of the guitar line and re-sequenced it in a way that reminds me of early Squarepusher and the mellower side of Kid606, both of which really appeal to me. It also has some beautiful sax work hidden away in there too, I’m not sure if it is sampled or written and recorded for the track, but it sounds fantastic either way. I’m a sucker for that every time.

This EP is a significant deviation from previous output from Slime records and I’ll be very interested to hear what will come after this. It’s nice to see labels who are not afraid to branch out in new directions.
