To be honest, always just seems like "tearout" is what people call heavy lfo wub wub tracks by artists they like (Kromestar, Skream, Benga, Koan Sound) and "bro" is what they call heavy lfo wub wub tracks by artists they do not like (Funtcase, Genetix, Cookie Monsta). A lot of the time, there isn't much of a difference musically.

also this^ .. i don't think it has to be "deep stuff" to not be bro. A lot of deep stuff as just as damn boring. i like dubstep that's neither deep nor ragefilth, nor "dungeon" (ugh). there's loads of it around. been around for ages, its called dubstep.

that's false, and is the entire reason for the shitstorm arguments
Listen to the drums, the phrasing, the orchestration, the background parts. Also, observe the culture around the music, the context and its repertoire. Just bc someone drops The Others "Off The Wall" in a set, doesn't make it brostep. BUT if its b2b Bare, Vaski, Dr. P, skrillex, even if they dropped Skream in there it wouldn't turn a brostep night into dubstep.

Also not saying its definitive proof, but it might be a clue if you see a laptop, controller etc. but not a single piece of plastic in the DJ's bag.

it's about lifestyle, attitude toward the music, the aesthetic of the whole night, not just this tune or that, these producers or those. Brostep is a rave. It's a nightmare. Dubstep is a dynamic, subheavy experience on a night out. it could be a filthy, raunchy, crazy experience, it doesn't have to be a bunch of "deep stuff" .. but it's made of dirty riddims, dirty mixes and selections ... it might even have some lasers, yoys and wobbles. But it doesn't stand solely on a foundation of filth sounds, with little more to offer, and basically only one drum beat (with identical sample selections).

Honestly i really think that if you can't tell between bro and dubstep, you must be musically retarded and probably the type to call some electro house "dubstep" because it has a wobble synth in it.

whatever happened to "blur the lines out of all recognition"? seems we are all about drawing dividing lines these days. tbh brostep is a term i don't really use. who am i to say what is and what isn't dubstep? can't wait till it gets to the point where people are coming up to people like skream and telling him what is and isn't dubstep... who cares? waste of time. just forget about genre names and just listen to what you want. try to not box yourself in with labels based on subjective references

You briefly mentioned the musical aspect and then went on about DJ setups. Fucking lol.

And i thought the silly argument was "tearout" vs "brostep" not "dubstep" vs "brostep". But im probably just musically retarded.

Dubstep right, cus of da electronics, yeah bro?

it might be a clue... is what i said. implying that there is a correlation, which is true..

also you got it the other way around. I briefly mentioned the Dj setup, and I went on about the musical aspects.

It's honestly not a big deal, I think a lot of these labels are fairly stupid (purple/tearout/dungeon/bro/etc), but I'm just trying to gain an understanding of what people mean when they talk about it. The whole "labelling genres/subgenres vs. not labelling genres/subgenres" debate has been overdone, I honestly don't know what my opinion is on it, but I don't really care.

Anyways, I think I get it. Would you guys consider Goth Trad sort of tearout? Seems slightly more LFO oriented, at least in some of his tunes.

I don't know anybody else who cares more about lables and sub genres more than they care about the music itself like you all do... who the fuck cares. If you like to then listen to it, and if you don't then staty away from it. You all are arguing about the definition of a subgenre that doesn't even really exsist.

doesn't matter if low freq. oscillations made the sound. matters if sound is "tearing out" ! like... if it's tough, dirty, heavy. doesn't matter if distortion unit made it that way, or not..

then again, gear and sound sourcing does have something to do with categorizing music on a larger scale... i.e. acoustic vs. electric rock (or jazz), primarily sample based vs. synth based EDM.. breaks vs. 4x4

But for these little subcategories, its just what the feel/ sound is. And it's usually not a producer being this or that, but their tracks. Goth Trad is dubstep that includes tearout. I don't have some kinda love affair with labels, but it just doesn't seem difficult to me and I like studying music.

also.. "purple" is NOT a stupid label!! it's easy to recognize and it's tag is a reference to codeine syrup :6:

Sub-genres don't work really work unless there's a lot of music that has echoes of an actual genre (ie, dubstep - 140bpm halftime) but doesn't really follow the same sound. Like hardcore, metalcore and deathcore, all follow the same sorta song structures. But each heavier (and pretty different from the last) than the last.

Dubstep/ Hardcore
Tear-out/ Metalcore
Brostep/ Deathcore

So yeah, sub-genres are important, to an extent.
