Mackie MR8 vs Yamaha HS80 vs KRK RP8

Post by e-motion » Fri Mar 09, 2012 8:39 am

Hey there,

So it's finally time to upgrade my monitor setup. These are the 3 options. I'm more inclined for the MR8's mostly because they are the cheapest but would like to hear your experience in comparing them.

I'm looking for opinions of people that listened to more than one of the 3, not "I have X and love it!". Yes I'll listen to them but that ain't really that easy where I live.

Cheers :)

i'd go for the mackie MR8's, i have heard the hs80 and the krk rp5's, not the same but for the price of it at that moment the sound was kinda bad for me (although it was a long time ago i've heard krk's). mackie mr8's have a really thick sound imo and won't let you down

The thing is not the hype, but I found them at only 10€-20€ over the price of RP6. It's kind of a bargain (400€ the pair). The Yamaha's are 462€ but I wanted to establish a maximum of 400€.

What would you do? Yeah I know, I need to test them but I gotta find a store for them and it won't be easy here in Portugal.

It's a tough choice between the MR8 and HS80. Don't bother with the KRKs.

The Mackies are louder, more bassy and in my opinion less flat and generally a worse monitor. But if you know them, you can definitely get good, reproducible mixes on them.
To me, the HS80s sound clearer and truer, with a lot more going on in the high end. Probably better monitors than the MR8s but I personally prefer the Mackies cos I am used to their sound.

If you'll be DJing at home through these monitors, or listening to a lot of music which you want to crank the bass on, or if you normally monitor REALLY LOUD or bass-heavy, I'd go for the Mackies.
If you're using the monitors only for producing, and don't normally monitor really loud, or DJ at home, and you want the flattest monitor out of those three, I'd go for the Yamahas.

In all honesty though, after being converted by Adam, I'd go for the Adam A5X's because the A.R.T tweeters are next level and they're in the same price range as the MR8/HS80.

Thanks man, from what I'm reading, I get exactly the same doubt :S

I want the monitors mainly for producing, what I really want is to get better mixdowns. The Yamaha's are probably better for this, if they have a good enough low end, but they're also more expensive.

Hands down Yamaha HS80's are the best. I would put the monitors in this order...
Yamaha HS80 > KRK Rokit 8 > Mackie MR8

Yes it's the MK2. The HR are another level tho ;)

The problem is that I live in Portugal and, at least in my area, the only musicstore sucks too much. I called them and they only have the Yamaha's in stock and don't even sell Mackie.
Most musicstores only sell instruments.

I'm going to keep searching.
