Youtube alternative

Post by el-tel » Fri Mar 09, 2012 8:51 am

I dont know about you, but im sick of googles consolidation of the net these days. Its easy to find a different search engine (one that dosnt track your IP address) but its very hard to get away from youtube. Its the main video site used worldwide and its a great medium for free expression and this makes it hard to boycott.

Dose anyone know of a good youtbe alternative thats big and fast growing?

The problem is the human herd use whats easily accessible and familiar to them.
Its time to break the chains of google, but whos stepping up to the plate?

its not a great alternative though. there's hardly any/no music on it and the player is very buggy.

if it was better id be all for it but its not, unfortunately.

Care to elaborate on this?? I've been on the hunt for one since i heard about the whole 'tailored advert' tracking thing. But due to my utter dependance upon google to find anything on the internet, its a bit impossible.

I've heard they tend to stop certain websites from appearing in search results too. I'm probably only missing out on spam/virus ridden sites, but I'd rather be able to censor myself thank-you-very-much.

Let me know whether you're getting away with that avatar or not. This off-topic forum lacks a certain kind
of thread..

Yea people need to support Vimeo more, quality over quantity if you'd ask me. Youtube gets like 48 hours of video
every minute I think. Should cost an amazing amount of energy to host all that bullshit content.

hey, dont get me wrong, its a great resource for filmmakers, its full of shorts and tutorials and the like. but ultimately its not good enough. if it was people would use it. same reason myspace got pushed out by facebook. same reason yahoo lost out to google. youtube is better then all the other video sites and as a result is used more.

Yea, vimeo looks like it has great potential but lacks in content at the moment. Even so, i signed up and am going to upload there. I think we all need to start looking at uploading on alternative sites, not just vimeo but others because at the end of the day, the power to change things is in our own actions individually.

Youtube is like catch 22, you search there because thats where you find what you are looking for and you upload there because thats where people are searching.

I use a proxy search engine, it uses google but hides your IP address from them. You dont get all the great features of google like news and maps but im sure its going to be available in the near future.

I use startpage, you can search the web, images and videos with the reassurance that you are not being tracked.

what exactly is your problem with youtube?

better question:

do you know the level of hardware necessary to keep a site like youtube alive? google essentially built its own internet to keep up with the bandwidth that youtube requires. it literally takes a company as big as google to make something like youtube possible. for that reason, you will never find an "indie" video site that is capable of what youtube does, which is why big video sites are rare or packed out with ads/spam.

download a separate browser for social media and googling. don't do anything else on that browser, except that. end of worries. also, google cannot track you unless you've signed into one of their products on a specific browser. for example, if you're signed into your YT acct, and not gmail or g+, everything you do is being recorded. if you're using google and not signed into their products, all they can do is record your session. a google session will expire after a few hours, unless you sign in. the only thing that is being recorded in google when not signed in , is your IP, which is fairly harmless, as it will only correspond to that specific session.

dailymotion is privately owned, and vimeo is owned by a venture capital firm, so at least with those two, you're not feeding an empire.

Yeah I get what you're saying. Youtube is great even if it was only for the amazing amount of content and the
usability of the website itself. But if I were to choose an alternative at this point, I'd pick Vimeo.

I'm not offended by the avatar at all btw.

I've read something along those lines a few times... Sounds like the only way to actually be anywhere near safe/anonymous these days.
