I brought two copies of Dr Drum just in case the first lot doesn't work.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

What? Punchy bass, punchy mids, punchy highs. With the dreaded 320Hz 'body' removed. What's your issue?Sharmaji wrote:therapist wrote:This is the preset I use on my dubstep.

what the fuck is that?therapist wrote:This is the preset I use on my dubstep.

I use very little in the way of EQs because I think that shit will come right near the end. I have a very simple set up of one hi pass filter for drums. All synth stuff is EQd on the device itself.
Looking at your template (why would you want everything to sound the same I dont know) I am guessing your bass is weak? if so thats because ur not doing it right! turning it up with EQs will just make a fake bass (?). Because you are boosting ur bass its then flooding the mix so your are compensating it by then boosting the highs? what is the 'dreaded 320 range' about btw?
I would advise against that template and any other templates. Start a song new for fresh results

Re: How do you EQ dubstep?
I'm thinking therapist's post may of been a little bit tongue in cheek
edit*
I take that back...just seen his retort
Why would you want to take out a massive scoop of 10dB on the mids at the end?
That is bad mix practice imo.
edit part deux*
in fact you shouldn't be eqing that much on the master at all. That shit needs sorting in the mix

Re: How do you EQ dubstep?
If there was a general rule (aside from the obvious lopass/hipass stuff for inaudibles and phase canc) all tunes would sound identical. Give everything it's own breathing space in the spectrum. That is always going to be based on the source of the sounds you're using. Hence why there is no 100% method for every situation. Hence why this thread is pointless.

Re: How do you EQ dubstep?
Dang! There seems to be a ton of jokes and some arguing on this thread.
Does anyone know of any good EQing guide or tutorial that just covers the basics? I'm trying to learn how to EQ and what it's all about.
I'm just looking for a place to get started.
But either way, I appreciate the relevant advice that some people are posting. Thank you!

Kick 80- 130
Snare 180-250
Sub 70- down
Can vary but that's generally the range

So, should I use high pass filters and low pass filters to keep the kick, snare, and sub bass within these ranges?
And do you have any recommendations for the mid-range sounds?
Thank you!

that looks like the "i have to make this goddawful kick drum, mic'd w/ a magnet, sound like music" EQ curve.therapist wrote:What? Punchy bass, punchy mids, punchy highs. With the dreaded 320Hz 'body' removed. What's your issue?Sharmaji wrote:therapist wrote:This is the preset I use on my dubstep.
seriously, folks do eq'ing like this on your master? If that's the case, y'all gotta treat stuff better at the track level. what's the point in doing any sort of gain structure, automation, etc, if you're just going to add 4db of 100hz and cut out 13db of 320? and 4db of prime baby-crying 2.4 khz? better to brighten up things that need brightening, turn up your kick and sub if you need that much more low end, and leave the rest be.

Re: How do you EQ dubstep?
if its a pure sine then you don't need to lowpass your sub and i prefer to boost frees instead of subtracting....mid range i tend to boost a little around 800 with a wide q and and high pass at 275

Re: How do you EQ dubstep?
If it's a pure sine, then it won't interfere with the other frequencies? So there's no need to lowpass the sub at all?ehbrums1 wrote:if its a pure sine then you don't need to lowpass your sub and i prefer to boost frees instead of subtracting....mid range i tend to boost a little around 800 with a wide q and and high pass at 275
And what is "a wide q?"
Thank you for your help, by the way.
I appreciate it.

a pure sine has no harmonics thats whyThe_Real_DeFalco wrote:If it's a pure sine, then it won't interfere with the other frequencies? Re: How do you EQ dubstep?
If you're EQ-ing your master that much then you should be EQ-ing a lot more on your tracks I'm guessing. On your master you shouldn't really add more than a d.b unless you're really lacking lows or something (in which case you should have done on the track
). I do most of my EQ-ing in my multi band compressor on my master (c6) and I find that works a lot better.
EDIT:
Also don't use presets for EQ-ing O.o every sounds gonna need different treatment, and the more practice you get at sounding out what each sound needs is what makes you better at it
