when you use a parametric EQ, the "Q" controls how large the range is of frequencies to be boosted. a narrow Q will look like a spike, a wide Q will look like a round lump.

Don't eq until your ears are good enough to actually hear what you are hearing...
Begin your eq career by hearing/identifying what you don't like about a sound, and then removing it with eq. What is left should sound better than what was there before.
Don't just start using eq, compression, resampling or any other technique because you heard about it on a forum, or see it in some whack ass youtube tut.

start by using a highly peaked eq, and sweeping it slowly through a sound as it plays. use it as a magnifying glass to identify points you dont like, then cut that frequency. also, read this until you cry or understand it fully and completely:

There is no difference in EQ'ing a dubstep track than EQ'ing any other type of track. It's all about what sounds good to your ears really. What you might want to look into are mixing techniques. If you want bigger drums, maybe learn parallel compression, and how to use a compressor in general. If you want a huge bass that isn't clipping, then look into resampling, and frequency splitting. If you want a clean professional sounding track, then learn everything you can about getting things sounding the way you want first, then possibly take some advice from The Moneyshot Thread that is stickied in the forum, and maybe learn to master your music by looking up some information about some general mastering processes.

Wild EQs on the master dont sound right to me:)
Only thing I have on the master is a dB meter and a spectral analyzer. Hardly ever use them tho and just go with my ears because I trust them more.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

sometimes i get a better sound by compensating with master bus eq... for example, lowering the bass /kick channels and boosting the low end on the master... not all the time... i generally try to find my levels before any of that shit. but sometimes making something happen on the master, like applying a subtle eq curve, makes the sounds gel together more, or just sounds different when you affect all the sounds at once
its not a hard and fast rule one way or the other, it just sounds different
