Hey guys,

I'm really new at electronic music. I've been learning the way Ableton Live works and a lot of synth stuff in the past few months, and I've been on the internet learning a lot. I come up on this forum a lot on google searches, and I decided it might be a good idea to get some feedback on my track. I really hope I put this topic in the right place, I'm sorry if I didn't. I've put a decent amount of time into this track, but its unmastered and very rough, mainly cause I'm looking for ways to master it and to make it sound...right. There's something missing from it and I'm not sure what it is. In my opinion its not that great, its just my first song trying to get a feel for how Ableton, plugins, etc. work. If I could get some feedback on it in general that'd be awesome. I really dont know what I'm doing completely yet. This version on my band's page on soundcloud isn't actually the most recent one, I've changed it a bit, but this is close. I'll post the updated version soon when I'm actually able to upload it.

Well I can tell you right off the bat that you're beat is weak whereas dubstep beats should be powerful...that may be what you felt was missing. Also, near the end of your intro you mix the synth and the strings with muddies up your whole high end so neither of them sound good. Your buildup was kind of weak but I liked the drop. The bass could've been bassier though. A little fine tuning and you can turn this into a pretty good track.

Thanks for the advice man. I mean I know that a lot of it is weak, especially the beat, and I get why, but I'm not sure how to fix that. I've tried drum processing, but its not enough. I'm using some really crappy samples, any ideas where I can get some good drum samples for dubstep?

If you sort through Ableton's samples you might find something decent. A lot of the process is EQ and layering though.

The samples I've been using for the drums are Ableton samples. I think I'm using...uh...something that includes "Live!" or something like that. I'm not sure exactly what its called. Do you know of any good samples with Ableton that would be better? I tried EQing but to be quite honest I'm not really sure how to effectively EQ.

Anything you like...you can also download free sample packs. And if you don't know how to EQ look it up

You probably don' t want to be using live/accoustic drums.



This should help a lot... one of the first things they mention is NOT using accoustic/live drum recordings... Pay real close attention, they drop the name of a GREAT drum kit.

Okay so I've replaced the best with vengeance samples and I love the sound of them, especially the kick (still trying to find a good snare) but when I play it with the song the kick doesn't come out well, it's drowned out a lot. I don't know if that's a volume mixing problem with the other tracks or if there's something else to bring the drums forward.
