FXpansion Etch - Analog modelled filters!

Another new product from FXpansion. This is a filter vst, built on circuit modelled technology! Looks interesting, i've just downloaded the demo to try. Theoretically, circuit modelling should sound the same or very close to real analog, except that it uses a lot more cpu.

Tough to say, i'd try the demo out and see what you think. I've been playing with it, and to be honest it sounds pretty awesome. Not too cpu heavy either.

niceee. hows the modulation capabilities. i have wow filter and it has its place, but i think in the future a nice analog modeled filter would be handy.

Every couple of weeks, you see a post, looking for a new filter... everyone is looking for a good sounding filter in vst form. God, it would be nice if this was it. I'd gladly shell one hundo for a really good sounding filter.

There's a lot of modulation capabilities, but its a bit fiddly. Seems to be a bug, but when i rendered an audio file, the automation didn't work in cubase. So i had to record to another track, a bit annoying but i guess it'll be patched soon.

There's a lot of automation through midi, which i find a bit awkward. Things like triggering the lfo start phase has to be done by midi, rather than just syncing to host and letting you set the phase. But there's several midi channels, you can control the filter cutoff via midi and lots more. So its a bit of a trade off.

Another nice thing it has is oversampling, quite handy when you're abusing these filters. And there's audio rate lfo's, so you can fm the filters too.

I've been playing on them for ages now, really addictive.

the more complex filter types they have there are the hybrid ones in their Synth Squad VST Synths- and they're amazing with the DCAM Waveshaper after that- really worth a look

Really impressed with this thing so far. In contrast to what someone else said, I find this to be the most cpu intensive standalone filter I can think of. Sounds great with ohmicide too on a simply reese.

I didn't like it. Nice modulation options but not a great sound imo. If it weren't a no-brainer deal I'd say pass...

tbh i didnt enjoy it either, tried the demo and found the presets to be horrible. didnt get great results myself either.

but dont take my word, it took me over a year to find a use for the wow filter, now it's an essential tool for basslines.

Yeah for 20 it's whatever. But the original price over 100, nope...
I found it plastic sounding, but I demoed it when it was new. I dunno if they have updated the sound/filters since. I have been waiting for its competitor The Drop (http://www.cytomic.com/cytomic-announce ... ter-plugin) which is coded by the guy who coded the best DCAM filters, and by contract FXPansion could not use his code in Etch.

Those of you who don't like Etch - what filters do you use? It seems hard to find good digital filters that don't alias or sound harsh when pushed to the extreme.

I assume around the same price as his compressor The Glue as well as a competitive price for Etch. I think I remember reading 79, but I dunno what currency that was...
The Drop is all new DSP/filters, but that guy knows his stuff inside and out. He is also the one who helped make the ones in Alchemy. Here's some interesting info: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/product- ... -etch.html

VirtualMark- Well, Etch isn't horrible or anything. Especially at the no-brainer price! Just wasn't feeling the sound when I demoed it before, but I will try it again because of this deal. Soft filters I like are Filtroid, BiFilter, Filterfreak, TAL Filter (similar to Massive performer), RS Raphael, Ohm Frohmage, normal EQ plugins... I hear great things about the U-he effects line, but I don't have them. I'd look into those for sure though especially with the reputation behind his synths.
