you can record the audio signal from your computer, cut up samples precisely cos you can zoom in really far other than i dunno

Sort of like soundforge but free?

So anyways if I want to sample an old DVD, I could play it on my computer and just start recording that into Audacity?

Shhhweet
Most daws should be able to handle this with decent audio drivers. I just record this stuff straight into flstudio.

When looking for records, yes, as has been mentioned, definitely look for spaceships, also look for statues, and headbands.

The actual records themselves. Definitely check for footprints on the vinyl, as well as cat pee on the sleeves, in the worst case scenario, any type of water damage will do.

I sample pretty much anything i can get my dirty little hands on.I have 2 folders with near a thousand acapellas i grabbed i think from dogs on acid a few years back. Also got a folder full of motown that has some proper quality vocals.I found that on a forum too,i think future producers or something like that.I have days where i just sample even when i think i have too much.
A good programme is rouge ameobi's audio hyjack,it is a system hack programme that lets you record from any audio source on your computer, you can literally sample a dvd as it is playing so much better than ripping the whole film and cluttering your hd.
I find film scores are absolutely priceless for sampling,i have tons. Also my mrs found a website where you can download video game scores..

I think I found it on DoA but someone uploaded some funk record samples they had, about 200mb worth of James Brown, Bobby Byrd etc breaks that I've really been digging. Almost all of my drums recently have just been a break chopped into 1 hits. Nothing makes your drums sound more cohesive than coming from the same drum set (hats especially)

Sample from anything, it's all about what you do with it afterwards. I made the nicest pad out of a guitar sample from a screamo song earlier this month, it took a lot of processing, but it's worth it and in the end you've got something pretty unique. EQ, reverb, time stretching, pitching, delay, envelopes, modulation effects, etc. you can really experiment with anything. Just make sure it isn't too recognizable when you're done with it ;)

Dub is great for drum sounds and weird effects. I always find my self cutting out kicks and snares and stuff from Blackboard Jungle.

Yeah you have to be careful with pitching. Single notes are fine, 3rds and 5ths are safe as long as you're careful, but once you get into chords it can be extremely tricky to keep stuff in key. Also, it's usually best to base your song around a sample instead of trying to fit one into something you have already, way easier to stay in key that way.

Hey kids! Don't want to spend time building up your own collection with unique sounds you've found yourself? Just ask someone else for theirs!

Creativity is overrated! :W:

Yeah but "building up" is generally taking from others, be it a website or a fellow forum user.

What, youve NEVER downloaded samples that others give out from their sample library? Come on let's not be elitist

Spending time gathering your own samples > asking someone for their pack of 2000 acapellas

Wub, your posts tend toward the epic, uncomfortably sometimes. But this post is a hum dinnger. Sweaters bro, can't overlook the sweaters. And with synths in the back ground... well it is clearly a winner.

But that track man, that is like pure manure. Just spread that and you can feed a family of four. Nutritious. In the first few bars I heard a few hip hop beats, but bits and bobs that could anchor tracks in many other genres. Unbelievable. My hat is off to you.
