I sample pretty much anything i can get my dirty little hands on.I have 2 folders with near a thousand acapellas i grabbed i think from dogs on acid a few years back.Also got a folder full of motown that has some proper quality vocals

Use google you will find them,that is how i come across them.acapellas4u.co.uk also is a great place for pellas.I read what wub said and to a certain extent i agree that you should just search like i did.I never asked anyone for samples just simply searched and sampled,now i have near enough a terrabites worth of audio to sample from.Its taken me 10 years to build up my collection,your only a baby and in an era where you have everything at your fingertips so my only advice is happy hunting

Special things about Audacity: it's free and crossplatform. Other than that, not much and it's a bit slow on the processing. But being multiplatform and free is a good trade off imo.


Apart from what's been mentioned on what to look for on vinyl covers, don't expect to score gold for .99. It happens surely, but it's rare. Pay up good for records and you're likely to find much more gold in them. Pick up those Collected Works Of ___ classical packs too. Besides being great for learning and inspiration, they always have good sample material like strings and percussion and have been recorded in famous halls with natural reverbs already.

Get foreign music, especially if you have no idea how to pronounce the words/names or don't even know which language it's in. That's how I've gotten some absolute gold before, even some worth hefty prices to collectors. Once I ended up selling an old Arabic ambient LP to a collector friend who offered more than 20x what I paid in the store and I used that to buy some more. I bought it because all it had on the cover was a glowing outline of the Kaaba and no words anywhere.

BTW that 'Let's Go Get Stoned' tune recorded by Lowell Fulson/Fulsom is a kind of 'traditional' rnb tune covered by many people, most famously Ray Charles and James Brown. Ray Charles' version was #1 for quite some time and has more stuff to sample.

Wub's General Sampling Tips

• Listen to as much various from as many different genres/artists/labels as possible
• Go digging, buy blind, listen to stuff you wouldn't usually.
• Do some educated research - if the drums on an obscure 60s funk record are sick, find out who the drummer is and see whatever records they've worked on.
• keep a notepad next to you at all times to make notes of what sounds good at what point in what track.
• Consider installing Audacity so you can sample direct from any sound that is playing on your machine via the Stereo Mix drop down
• Internet radio is a fucking great source of weird sounds these days, plus you can get stuff from all over the world.
• Come up with a structured filing system for your samples, whatever works for you, so you can find stuff again you've grabbed it.
• Avoid sampling from the genre you're trying to make. It won't sound as good as when the artists originally did it, and you'll be musically inbreeding your tunes.
• Charity shops are a great place for obscure shit. If I see a record by a band I don't recognise, and there are eight of them on the cover, half black and half white, standing in front of a spaceship, I'm buying the record.

Ripped a snare from a white label 12", by current value, cant remember name of tracks.
I sometimes rip hits off old soviet pop wax.

But best sample source is youtube, random clips. Especially for weird sounds. For the drum hits I suggest use Your existing ones to craft something fun and new, like I did with a kick, I love and cant do without now

Btw - using this method... just last night I copped an original "When Doves Cry" 12" for £0.01, a Kate Bush 7" for £1, a Stereolab 7" for £1, and Janet Jackson's Control on 12" for £1. I was even willing to pay for shipping, so all in got all 4 for £12... still a bargain in my opinion.
