I haven't had the opportunity to try this yet, but I totally understand what your saying. Using a frequency shifter would probably work really well for this technique.

That's the best I've been able to get with the robot noises. Pretty much all the noises are made loading organic samples into the fruity granulizer, some tweaking, and a load of processing to get them sounding right.
