OUT NOW!
For its third release, WattHz Records has called upon the talents of Seattle’s, TZR. Working solidly on developing his sound over the years, TZR’s latest offering, Headhunter, is his signature.
The title track, Headhunter, is a haunting introduction to the dark, minimal dubstep that ensues throughout the EP. Tribal percussions are weaved amongst suggestive mid bass tones and moody atmospheres. The meticulous layering creates movement and texture that defines the direction of the EP.
Australian producer Sook follows up with a truly sublime remix of the same track. This song engages the listener to participate with the negative space deliberating the rhythm. Eerie pads and deep, synth stabs lash colour onto the dark backdrop of another world. Spatially intelligent and subtle, this remix is a fine example of the art of restraint.
Fedaykin, the third track and a word coined by Frank Herbert in his novel Dune, are ‘death commandos’ who give their life to right a wrong. Fedaykin ties rolling percussion and hypnotic sub bass together with the use of an enchanting Middle Eastern instrument, the Nay flute. The track is a nod to the epic novel and stays consistent with the theme of Headhunter.
For the final track of the EP, TZR teams up with Press, also from Seattle, to produce the beautifully rounded, Amazon. Plucked strings tease the listener with its attentive interplay between drums and swirling atmospherics.
TZR’s uniform palette throughout Headhunter shows a masterful understanding of his craft and such delivers a well-balanced and compelling release.
