Post by Bass_Jacka » Thu Apr 19, 2012 6:42 pm

Watagwarn! Please, please, please listen to me tune and give some feedback. Please

Been working on this the last couple of weeks. Really stuck as to what the track needs, or is missing :6: Would very much appreciate some much needed feedback from you kind people!

Haven't really touched to much on the EQ'ing or mixing down yet, probably should have but...

Soundcloud

Anyway, as I said... some feedback would be MUCH appreciated.

Thank you and Good Day! :Q:

Oh, and if you think the track is shite, don't worry I can take it, I'd rather know :)

That's proper feedback right there :/ not.....

Fancy giving me a reason as to why I should quit producing dubstep? Something that I've been working hard at for around 6-7 years, and get pretty good feedback on elsewhere... I don't come on this forum to be told I should quit producing, I come on here for some feedback and tips as to how I can improve on my production skills. Telling me I should quit, isn't feedback, it's just you being a cock! Peace!

It has many positive elements but imo it feels as though there are 2 tracks playing throughout.
Your vocal is conflicting quite heavily with the midrange elements.
Have you got the timing right on the vocal?

Imo you just have too many elements fighting for space in the tune.
There's just too much to focus on but it might well be because of the vocal.
Have you got an instrumental version?

Thank you for a 'proper' comment lol! When you say two tracks, do you mean like playing 'on top' of eachother? Would you say this is maybe becuase there is too much going on, or not mixed down correctly?

The vocal itself I'm not sure about. Was thinking about scrapping it alltogether, or maybe using subtle cuts instead of the entire vocal. I do have an instrumental version, which I shall post later for your thoughts. I've been told by others that my vocals confilct with the midrange elements of my tracks, but I've never been able to get it right! I've literalls sat there for hours and hours trying to get the vocal to site right; EQ'ing the vocal, then EQ'ing the drums etc, then the vocal again and so on, but it never seems to sound right. Any tips on where a vocal should be sitting in the mix, frequency wise? At the moment with vocals, I'm low-passing them so they don't conflict with the sub, maybe a slight cut in the midrange and the high ends depends on the vocal itself.

But yeah, I'll upload an instrumental when I've finished work!

Thank you so much for the feedback man! I really appreciate it! :4:

What I mean by '2 tracks playing throughout'
If you DJ for example, if you don`t mix the new track in properly you can get a real mish mash of sounds playing from both tunes.
Which you have to selectively eq to make a smooth transition.
Your track sounds like it is 2 tracks being mixed and causing muddiness.

I think the concern is firstly with the tempo of the vocal and then secondly with the key.
EQing won`t solve this as the tuning will never sound right if not in the correct key.

With vocals though you also need to consider flow.
The singer/rapper will always sing on tempo to create a good flow.
Your vocal does not flow correctly.
The kicks and accentuations are not timed correctly.

Imo this track will be good without the main vocal, possibly keep the female vocal which imo didn`t go with the male ragga vocal either.
A vocal as mentioned is an important part of a track, not an afterthought.
Either you write the entire tune with the vocal in mind or you adjust the tune to suite the vocal.
That or actually effecting the vocal to suite.

Thank you so much mate! Really means a lot to get some decent feedback, from someone who makes decent tunes aswell! Like the K hole one lol!

I think I'm gonna take your advice, try scrapping he main 'ragga' vocal, and try leaving the female one. I think thats where I generally go wrong with vocals, I tend to start out making a tune, get to a certain point then look for a vocal I like. Maybe I should find a vocal I want to work with first, then 'sculpt' the track around the vocal.

Cheers again!

It's really hard for me to get a good feel for this song without mixing/eq/mastering. It definitely feels like the mid-range elements are competing for dynamic headroom. This could easily be fixed my mix/mastering, but I just can't tell.

But beyond the mixing, the vocal through-line makes it feel like the majority of the song is the 'chorus'. Maybe if you replace the middle section that has vocals with a cut-up simplified half-time thing, and leave more space between the mid-present notes (or just leave em out for a bit). I think this will give the listener a break and allow them to hear the instrumental parts more independently.
