Read Read Read Read Read, Produce Produce Produce Produce, Repeat. There's not really a square one, because everything relies on everything else its just sheer experience and experimenting. Also don't worry about specific frequencies and Db levels that everyone talks about on here, it is just a very rough guideline. Every sample needs something different, as does every bass etc. To find out where your kick ( or any audio) lies in the spectrum you will need a spectrum analyzer, I suggest the Voxengo Span which is a free vst. Check the production bible on here first and go from there. When I started out I felt like I read more about producing than actually producing just so I could come to grips with everything, now that I feel my knowledge is great enough to commit to full production the only reading I really have been doing is on Music Theory. Sorry if this is long winded, but music production is a lot of little baby steps followed by some more baby steps until you get the whole picture, and then its the refinement of the whole production game, which is definitely the hardest, and biggest step. Hope I helped a little bit :D

read this entire forum.
square one will take you the longest to get through.
don't focus on making songs right now. you can't.
learn your daw, learn synthesis, learn what effects do, and learn how to mix. in that order

This forum is a guide to dubstep, really, read around, browse youtube and such!

I use a spectrum analyzer, say I have a kick hitting really nicely at 100 hz, I'd put an EQ on it and boost it at 100hz at about 1db or so to get a punch out of it, boost some of the high ends.. and at about 200 hz cut a little out of it because that's where the snare usually hits... Then I usually plug a high pass filter on my kicks and cut them off at about 80hz, that's where the bass lays.. watch masterclasses as well.
