Advice on "DJing"

Here's my story... I own ableton suite 8 and an APC40. I want to start doing live sets but I'm not sure what different clubs accept. Is my APC 40 ok? I know it's not exactly "DJing" but I think it would be fun. Do I have to have CDJ's?

It's done on a per-club/promoter/night basis.

Some guys would love to be able to advertise it as a (live) set. Other's are a bit more fussy (especially if there's not much room) I had a friend who couldn't even use a DJ midi-controller (Mixtrack pro) because it wasn't flash enough

Probs better to be able to do both live sets and DJ sets that way if a club or promoter doesn't allow you to then you still have a gig.

Show up to a lot to support the nights you'd likely be trying to get gigs at. Get to talking to people, promoters, other DJs. Have a mix or something handy (CD) and get it to the promoters or people running the show. Alternatively, try and start your own night

I would advise to keep the APC at home. I mean at least where i'm from midi / software controllers are shunned.
Dont get me wrong i have an APC40. Neat little piece of equipment but i dont think itd be well accepted for djing even though you can dj with it.
I also have a pair of decks and theyre way better than any controller ive ever touched. it feels so much better to match songs by ear perfectly and drop em instead of waiting and staring a the computer screen and then hitting a button imo
ive also had live unexpectedly quit a few times using my APC, not a crowd pleaser

Pretty much this. If you want to use the fact that you've got your own tunes as part of your marketing ploy then go for it.

yeah that's the only thing, live 32 bit is extremely shitty......... can't wait for 9.
