Re: What's the point of it?
asking 'what is the point of music' is like asking 'what is the point of poetry?' either way, you're a fucking asshole

This actually made me laugh out loud for some reason. I guess it might have been the contrast, all these chocolate milk posts made me forget what this was originally about.tacospheros wrote:asking 'what is the point of music' is like asking 'what is the point of poetry?' either way, you're a fucking asshole

EDIT: Ooops! I'm sorry, I seem to have bumped a thread that has been dead for 10 days. Mods have mercy on me! In my defense I have to say that I've been unable to visit these forums for a little while.

Re: What's the point of it?
some dickhead old guy aging-hippie type once told me "poetry doesn't even count as writing, because, everyone 'writes poetry' ... and none of it is good" I told him to fuck off and read some Shel Silverstein.

As far as the whole "you can only get it with that uk club culture" whatever, iirc burial never went out to clubs, never had any of those experiences, and knows the feeling just as well as I do living in some shitty Midwest town. He was only told stories by his older brother. That I think is why it has that dance groove but that worn reflective vibe also. You don't need to be from anywhere to "get" that.

Trax, I honestly don't know whether or not you're joking.-TraX- wrote:since we're on the topic n soe1 help me out, what was the point of Picasso? I mean, his portraits were shit, they didn't look like a person at all so wat whas the point of it
Re: What's the point of it?
Sorry for resurrecting this thread again but I don't agree with you. Picasso's paintings are beautiful and among other things show a great sense and understanding of perspective. He was great at capturing the full 3d essence of something in two dimensions. I don't agree with you regarding cubism, however there are some types of modern art that I don't see the point in. The problem with saying this about modern art is that when you say that it doesn't have a point, someone will claim that, by saying that, you've confirmed it has a point, since you reacted to it, even if that point is it's utter pointlessness.-TraX- wrote:since we're on the topic n soe1 help me out, what was the point of Picasso? Re: What's the point of it?
the way you describe the track, while asking about the point, you indirectly say that repetition has no point.. or maybe just that you don't feel anything when listening to that track.. it reminds me of my own "mythical"(?) theory about some types of music listeners, where it seems like they only listen for the variation, like music is just a serie of patterns, and (here is the "point") not able to "get into" or be hypnotised by any of those patterns, only listening in a sort of waiting state "ok, now i heard this pattern twice, i get it, it's planned, now give me next pattern"..
like others said, it's a feeling, and if you can get into it, and like the feeling, then it's a good thing that it's repeated.. not everything can be repeated and automatically "work" tho' ..seen from a minimal-techno pov it's like making a 2-4 pattern, and make it as "perfect" (can be "imperfect" on purpose in some ways) as possible, so that it can go on and on forever (or atleast 3-10 mins)
and making you feel like you don't want it to stop.. some euforic feeling
