It's not. I bought an £800, had various consultations and tried loads of others. Standing and moving around will always be better than sitting. No matter what chair you use.

I changed my entire studio up recently so that I stand whilst producing now, the vibes are back!
I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

Do you use mostly hardware? I'm sort of interested in this approach, but I'm mostly software so I won't be tweaking a lot of knobs and stuff.

I do stand up when I'm DJing in my bedroom though, I don't sit down for that lol

I take it all back! After trying to produce standing for three days, my back was killing me! So I've gone back to sitting and to getting up as often as I can. In fact, I spent today hacking my Roland keyboard to turn it into a studio workstation:

I use logic via some midi pads and a midi keyboard to actually write stuff. When it come to tweaking and alike, the long stuff, I sit down and use the lappy direct (like the OP says, you're back will hurt if you're stood up for 3 hours). Bu there is a different energy when you're stood up and bopping around in the writing phase.

I produce laying down. I can honestly say I'm not kidding.

nice, I use logic too. I just sort of feel like my composition and my tweaking/mixdown sort of go hand in hand, the two processes aren't exclusive from each other, so standing up would wear me down pretty quick. Each to his own though, we all have different workflows/methods.

I've known some professionals to stand all day at their standing desks (no I'm not referring to Donald Rumsfeld, but exactly that). These guys were in their 60's. Y'all should be ashamed.

Currently using a modified Studio RTA creation station desk so I can use it standing. Did alot of research concerning this and decided to go with a standing desk about a year ago because of how unhealthy sitting is for you. Although I'm not sure standing while producing is much better.

Maybe working on a standing desk all day in an office or something would be easier, at least then it wouldn't be so damn boring. But for producing I'm not so sure, for a couple reasons.

For one standing all day makes my feet hurt really bad, even with a special mat.
I have a high bar stool if I need to take breaks but then I just end up sitting on the computer and it's not very comfortable.
Also consider, even with monitors at the perfect height, tweets ear level, if you move even half an inch the sound completely changes because of the sweetspot.
Most of the time you won't even be in the sweet spot!
Hurts my neck and back.
Much harder to concentrate and stay focused.
Much easier to get distracted (taking 5 minute 'rest breaks' that end up lasting an hour or more)
Seems to make me much more tired at the end of the day. If I lay or sometimes even sit down after working all day I'll fall asleep instantly. Not good if you have stuff to get done!

This is just my experience with a standing desk. Yours may differ.
If you do decide to go this route, make sure everything's at the right ergonomic height. Computer monitor around eye level, studio monitors positioned and leveled correctly, computer keyboards, hardware, etc at the correct wrist/forearm level. And also invest in a good mat, you're going to be standing on it all day after all.
Even with everything perfect, I can't promise it'll work out for you. I wanted it to work, and thought it did for a little bit, but it might cause more damage than good in the long run.

I'm going to be converting back to a normal desk most likely. And getting rid of this horribly designed RTA desk. [seriously it's so short with an incredibly high monitor shelf, why?]
Getting some IKEA furniture that'll be the perfect height to begin with and a decent chair. As much as I hate sitting all day I'll just try to get frequent breaks I guess.

Anyway sorry for the long post. Hope it may be of help to some people. Would love to hear how this standing vs sitting desk works out for others.

Peace :4:

Gotta post up some pictures of this chair I'm building. Puts you in a kind of fetal position while sitting at your desk. Hoping this works.

For these reasons, I reverted back to a seated desk as well!

i can agree with feet aching but everything else i would disagree with. For a start i only stand up when writing, mixing down should be done while sitting in the 'sweet spot'. I find it easier to concentrate and stay focused as i get more done as i tend to be more inspired. I wouldnt say it tends to tire me out any more than usual aswell.
Im not saying this to prove you wrong or anything but just incase anyone is considering the change as it may be benificial to alot of people.

Have to take back most of the stuff I said. After trying to go back to a sitting desk for a few days, I'm definitely going to stick with the standing desk.

It's worth it for the few minor inconveniences. I suggest trying it for yourself. If you don't like it you can always go back. Just get a couple shelves
that are the perfect height and use them to raise your desk. That's what I did.

Feels like you have much more freedom standing. If you get tired you can always take your laptop to the kitchen and what not.
