Re: my unique live setup (dunno if ANYONE else does this)
Liam Howlett basically did that live as The Prodigy. He would have parts of their tracks playing as live 'mashups' before that was a term.
Not quite the same, but I used to use hardware samplers live with loops and samples arranged by myself and taken from other tracks, mixed with a turntable or 2. Sometimes I would sample the record live and loop it using phrase samplers. You can do similar in Live and all that now, but this was in the late 90s where software wasn't advanced much. Funnily enough, I really dislike using software for it even though it's easier. Hardware samplers are a bitch to set up live but it pays off IMO.

OK -
But seriously... I do have to ask... WHO CARES?
I am a classical cellist with 30+ years under my belt ... so I have at least an IDEA of what is Live and what Is Not.
The way I divide up the playing field is this...
*) are you playing ONLY your own tracks and doing something even mildly interesting with them? If yes - than = LIVE SET
**) are you playing someone else's tracks = no matter how cool you play them - DJ SET.
For the haters let me explain- once you play someone else's track - no matter how dope you get with it... it is a DJ set. If it is all original - Live Set. Simple as.

Except when it's not actually live, but playing back premade sets and using autosync so you can tweak on dblue?

I think this is what The Bridge from Ableton is essentially allowing you to do.Mexztah wrote:How about we mix using Serato and Ableton

input or output buffer size? or both?Today wrote:OP you have to reduce your buffer sizedjaeke wrote: true. I have been bouncing around the idea of doing live synth lines...but here's my main issue (it' probably a really dumb one but like I said, I'm just bouncing the idea around, haven't even TRIED it yet): when I have used midi to record notes for like, when I'm working on a track, and there's a fairly significant delay. that would not go well live. how would I go about minimizing that delay?
find hardware setup > options for your i/o device > reduce buffer size to 256 or at most 512

Re: my unique live setup (dunno if ANYONE else does this)
Nice discussion...
I dont know, i personally think that nowadays Dj sets need to evolve, back in the day I would go to check a Dj if I knew he had some hot tunes, tunes I wasnt able of finding because of my limited range or knowledge, now I have Internet, so I can just go to beatport and buy all the songs under Dubstep tag, or of course, download them illegaly... Its getting more and more common to see "djs" doing "live acts", Skrillex itself goes with an triggerfinger (although im not sure if he just has a grainshifter mapped and thats it)... I personally have a hardware based live setup, all around my MPC1000, and I kind of do what I would do if I had ableton+launchpad/mpd... I like playing live, you dont need money (my live setup is cheaper than a macbook with ableton with launchpad with nocturn), you just need to know what you want and really learn your tools
By the way, I kind of like the idea of the OP, Daedelus does something similar but using very short samples and loops from songs plus his own loops, he does some dope live shows! But at the same, the Gaslamp Killer is a straight forward DJ, with Serato (o tracktor) and he is just doing mashups with cue, and that is also a really nice show, he, in fact has some f*cking amazing musical taste
