Forum drama

Post by hudson » Tue May 08, 2012 6:56 pm

Have you been around for/involved in any good forum drama, on here or otherwise?

Four or five years ago I hung out on a forum for the band Modest Mouse, and one two these two old tapes that no one had even heard of before showed up on ebay. They had about 20 songs each, hand-drawn artwork, and were from the early 90's when Isaac Brock (the singer) was only 13 or so and was just recording stuff onto an answering machine in the shed he was living in. The seller said that Isaac used to make these tapes and give them to his friends, so there were only, like, 20 or 30 copies in existence. Obviously all of us were foaming at the mouth over these things, but we didn't want someone outside of the forum to buy them and share the songs, so we got two long-time/trusted members to buy them, we donated a bunch of money (I didn't) in case there was a bidding war, and they promised to upload the tapes when they got them. Well, they both won the bid, but they were immediately contacted by an associate of the band and they were told not to put the tapes up or else there would be some sort of legal issue (I'm not sure of the full details here, but I remember both members being extremely reluctant to upload the tapes). Eventually the two members with the tapes disappeared, everyone started arguing, etc. etc. a few months pass, then both the tapes are put on megaupload for five minutes, everybody grabbed them, and a few weeks later the forum went down forever. It was pretty crazy.

:o Holy fuck - I can only imagine what the post topics musta looked like [on a Modest Mouse forum]... "Has Isaac finished going through puberty yet?" "Is Johnny Marr as drunk as he looks?" :6:

Anyway...

That wouldn't happen to DSF (the whole label intercession/possible site shutdown) because it's not just centered around one group.

Or would it?

Only drama I've been in is when Badger promised me a copy of Cluekid - Halogen but then realised he sold it to someone else.

I tend to stay away!

DOA got to the point where even lurking left me physically drained in REAL LIFE... That was a mean Forum. Lots of laughs, but ultimately too stressful... I had to go.

The old Planet Mu forums had some decent trolling going on. Kinda similar story to the OP, the Steinvord EP that got released on Rephlex earlier this year got leaked on there way back in 2009.

another forum ive been on a few years, there are lots of meetups and back in the day everyone just used to get really fucked up, shag each other and then argue about it for weeks. its a bit more dignified now but not by much

been around for some classic ones on nwdnb.co.uk back when it was active

the ''Penny saga'' was especially entertaining

long story very short

preston MC double teams a chick in the bathroom at Preston event, takes photo's and video's, photo's get leaked, big kick off on the forum... THEN... Penny joins the forum to defend her honour, things got very messy by that point

Just petty fights and stuff ... but sort of related - this one time on Youtube that Gemini guy from UKF sent me some long, ridiculous message outlining "Gemini's Internet Rules" cus i insulted him on his 500,000 + viewed video
