Soca

Post by badga tek » Sat Feb 17, 2007 8:21 pm

Anyone into their soca? Any tune recommendations? A lot of the stuff I've heard (not that much at the moment) sounds quite good, I'm liking the energy but a lot of the tunes are ruined a bit by some proper bait melodies/choruses. Be interested to hear some darker stuff maybe

Bunji Garlin - Flags and Colours
Carnival anthem.Pure cheese but brilliant

Dawg E Salaughter & Rikki Jai - Drinking Rum
Class tune Soca/Dancehall vibes

Its all about Machel Montano the King of Soca check any of his stuff really.

Think you might have trouble finding dark stuff, its a little too warm there for moody vibes.Darkest tune i can suggest is Shurwayne Winchester feat Elephant Man - Adrenaline. Not really dark but a bit more aggy Dancehall style.

That's because it basically sucks when you're not at carnival/on holiday.

Yes, Soca is one of my pet hates atm and i feed it regularly.

And if anyone's interested, I'd recommend

Machel Montano - We Not Givin Up
Iwer George - Fete After Fete
Isaac Blackman - To The Ceiling

yeah, look for Maximus, also 3Canal...
I'll look into it, you are going to hear mostly "jump and wave" outside of the Caribbean. There are some darker and moody tunes "Mud", "Jumbie", that play for Jouvert (the morning b4 Carnival in T&T)...

on it ;)

carnival was something of a revelation on this front, i haven't enjoyed myself like that for a long time

so soca is a bit of a catch all term right? i've read the wikipedia page and it hasn't told me so much. i always thought soca implied a specific rhythm, but it seems that i was wrong about that?

some of the stuff i heard at carnival was crazy, 150 bpm, four to the floor, thunderous bass, wild percussion, amazing vocals

where in london or on the internet is good to go to buy / be advised on this stuff?

I'm fond of Soca. My fave tune so far is Sugar Daddy feat. Ms. Thing - Sweet Soca Music (rmx)... it uses those Beatles' strings that the Verve sampled for Bittersweet Symphony.

It's on this mix I made longside some jungle, reggaeton and dub.

My somewhat limited definition of it (and I know someone's gonna shoot me down and correct me) is that soca is to calypso as dancehall is to reggae. Faster, more upbeat and modern and influenced by a wide range of other genres internationally

Agree with that. Neat way of putting it.

What gets me stuck is explaining Dancehall to your average mainstream person. If I say it came from Reggae I'll get "like Bob Marley?" so I end up saying "like Sean Paul... but better".
