I was thinkin the same thing... also, how some individuals are not allowed to make dubstep for some reason. The music belongs to no one.[/quote]

It's funny how something that starts open-ended and exciting quickly becomes generic twaddle. Punk started off as adventurous and open to possibilities and then quickly moved to three chord thrash in much the same way that dubstep started as garage that could incorporate any other influence and then descended to a large proportion of the output being big snares, sub and moodiness.

Purists really bore me, why not appreciate a broader pallette of sound?
Hmm....

I think there are two different conversations to be had here. One about the dangerous of homogenisation to further creative niceness in dubstep and the other about this shit 10".

Amen here. That Bong-Ra post is interesting. At least he clears up the fact that it's not V-Snares doing dubstep, but then he goes for the cheap shot about what you "can and can't do" in dubstep.

Here it is mates: No one actually gives a shit about what you do with the dubstep sound. Wobble it up, add some vocals, change the tempo, whatever you want to do - do it. The only catch is that if your final product sounds like crap, we're gonna trash it.

That's the only case that should be argued here. This isn't about dubstep shutting someone out based on principle, it's dubstep saying 'hey mate, this sucks.'

For what its worth, and still totally revelent to this thread - dubstep, dumbstep, Snares, breakcore et all - on both sides of the fence, some peeps would say that a label like Planet Mu is one of the biggest bandwagon jumpers out there.

Simply bringing this up for conversation, as it might very well pertain to this thread in more ways than one.

Feel free to discuss.

not so imo...

stooges, new york dolls, ramones, clash, sex pistols - mostly three chord basics.

fugazi, black flag, gang of four, sonic youth etc etc etc etc etc - much more creative.

Regardless of whether Mu jumps on the latest stuff, you can't deny their releases are awesome. The latest Syntheme, Darqwan, Ital Tek, etc have all been so spot on it's ridiculous.

did you see the new 140ish speed Duran Duran Duran thing that came out on Mu ? Its got the dubstep labels but its not really dubstep at all. Bassy and heavy though bit like queer booty bass or something

Given that pretty much everyone here is here because they heard dubstep, thought it was fantastic, and wanted to get involved, why do people get surprised or annoyed when people other than them hear dubstep, think it's fantastic and want to get involved?

na its morel ike when someone has been doin their thing for a long time and then suddenly switches to a more dubstep style, that can either come off as a genuine style progession or as in the case of this 10", it can come off as a bit of a cynical move. Especially as its not very good.
Just my opinion. I've felt Snares' work in the past

If anyone's getting into dubstep for the girls or the money they've got a suprise in store.

Maybe I'm too nice, but if someone makes a dubstep tune then I tend to assume it's because they like the music and want to be part of it, or at least they like the music and want to do something similar. On the other hand...
Especially as its not very good.
...if it's not very good it's not very good. If someone's heard a couple of Loefah tracks and thought 'I can do that' and produced something shite, fair enough, it's shite. But I'm willing to believe that it's well intentioned shite.

A crap tune is a crap tune, that's unmistakable - but still entirely subjective. I'm sure what peeps are mostly responding to here is how the Snares Kriss records was mislabled, or marketed as "dubstep". That wasn't Snare's doing.

At the end of the day, Dubstep will just be another term to most who like to genrify every fart they here. Ya know? And why be purist about about the newest music term on the block that's gonna be misconstrued like everything else. What are you gonna do? Trademark the word dubstep?

There's been more of an earlier influence from breakcore peeps on some current dubstep sounds than some might consider. I mean Dj Scud did a garage track 7 years ago (Roots Rock Ravers - Transparant release). blah blah. And thankfully that influence will never be staunch, purist and .. boring.

And speaking of Planet Mu - who release both Snare's and now Oris Jay tunes - what if Planet Mu put out the Kriss Snares release and labeled it dubstep? What would you do? Bust Paradina's knees for it?

What's next? A dubstep war on "idm"?

Wouldn't try it. He'd probably get Aphex on you. Then you'd get hounded to death by ginger bearded children. :2:

The original thing with punk was moving away from the excessive virtuousity and pretentiousness of progressive rock and having lyrics which said something about the world rather than bubblegum pop which were the two main styles at the time.

If you look at the clash they quickly moved on to incorporating plenty of other influences into their work - dub, disco, etc. Lydon with PIL, and Siouxie and the Banshees, the Slits and others took it somewhere more interesting. It was supposed to be about breaking constraints of what was acceptable and being creative but as it slid into Oi, it became generic shit (unless you're Gary Bushell in which case it was a golden era).

Might be splitting hairs, but Sonic Youth started out as No Wave and I always thought of Gang of Four as new wave. Fugazi have always been boss though, always progressing and refining their sound. Great business ethics as well.

yeh no wave, new wave it was still punk 2 me. definatly get what u mean, once it went experimental there was a reaction by many to go back to basics, i guess thats what hardcore was all about, but i still love it.

Fugazi are quiute possibly the greatest band in the world imo, not just cos of the music but like u say the way they progressed and changed there sound in such interesting ways.

Gang of four were post-punk, wikipedia agrees with me http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gang_of_Four_%28band%29
