I've been producing using my laptop and headphones for 2 years and ive got on just fine to be fair

I reckon saving up for decent monitors > midi keyboard.

In fact, the things I'd rather have than a midi keyboard:

Good audio interface.
Good Monitors.
Good Sub.
Good headphones (already got these).
A second computer screen, if only just for a mixer and SPAN (shit gets congested)
High quality plugins (freeware can get you a very long way though, especially if you know who bootsy is)

I'd reckon you'd have more important things to save up for than a midi keyboard.

I have 2 KRKs, good sub, powerhouse computer with actually 3 monitor3, and I recently bought FL studio producer 3 days ago. I also purchased some really good loops and samples from producer loops. As far as plug ins, I know its cliche but a lot of my brostep brethren use NI Massive and I tried it out before and I honestly feel its a solid program that can do a lot. easy to use as well. What I dont have is any type of midi keyboard and I dont think I have appropriate headphones. I have some Bose headphones, super high quality but Im not 100% sure if its the right type. And Ive been actually using headphones much more often lately because I like to produce at night and the neighbors arent having any of that. And my girlfriend cant stand when the same beat plays over and over again a million times so I just throw on some headphones. Ive been researching it, but any suggestions would be nice

But I have a question about the monitor thing. When Im using FL, its restricted to one screen, as well as any vsts I have for it. I cant drag anything over to any other screen once its associated with Fl, and shit gets so cluttered in there. Was wondering if there was something I was doing wrong or if only stand alone programs that work outside of FL can be used on another monitor.

As for headphones, the Sony MDR-7506 have served me well.

All the free VSTs you'll ever need. ~ Watch the quality control, some of the plugins are great, others are really crap.

ShortCircuit used to be big dollar equipment now it's easily the best free vst sampler.

Hourglass is an amazing free granular synthesis engine that's just been released, it's not a VSTi though but deffinately one to grab.

Audacity has just been updated to 2.0. Easily the best free audio editing suit. (use it in conjunction with Reaper)

Add Bootsy's Variety of Sound plugins to that list. An Absolutely incredible set of vst effects.

People on gearslutz have been selling their UAD cards because of these plugins. (Yes I am a complete fanboy, but only because they sound amazing)

After I had logic for a few months and I had the basics down, I got myself a basic 25 key MIDI keyboard (M-Audio Oxygen 25). It's pretty cheap (I think I got it for like $60?) and it's great for just tooling around and coming up with melodies and shit.

Its is true you need little more than a computer decent speakers/headphones and a daw.I have built up a plugin collection over the years when i have had spare cash.My most recent ones were the fabfilter effects bundle which i can't advise enough to buy and psp vintage warmer2 which is now my favourite plug i own.
Once you get your daw down and start learning what plugs do and how to use them properly you will start to know what you need to add then look for 3rd party plugs that suit your need.
Hardware wise just get a midi control surface like a keyboard,i have the novation sl which is a awesome controller but a little bit pricey.I bought the 64 key and it is and does everything i need it to do within my daw.
