Summer Production!!!!!!! shhheeeiiiiiit
Whats up dudes of dubstepforum, haven't posted in awhile but never-fear, I'M BACK! So here's the deal... I stop working fulltime at the end of this week and starting after that, I only work about 20 hours a week FOR THE WHOLE SUMMER! You all know what that means! MORE TIME FOR PRODUCTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, I was wondering if you guys have ever put together a production schedule for yourself spanning 3 months? I would describe my level of production skill as INTERMEDIATE. I know how to work all the plugins in live and I've been producing about 7 months. Any advice for me on a schedule that may have worked for you would be awesome. E.G. Week 1: Day 1: bass patches, Day 2: Lead Synths, Day 3: Song......... or something like that.

I don't know how well you can schedule creativity. Just do what feels right at the time brah. Tho you could try and do the tune-a-week thing.
Comfi
Super experimental.
Soundcloud
I have a thread here discussing the track, and offering you the chance to remix it, more details in thread! See what you can come up with!

Re: Summer Production!!!!!!! shhheeeiiiiiit
Id your first step should be to SET GOALS so you know what you are trying to accomplish... then from there you can work on a schedule
are you trying to just up your skills on sound design on synths and percussion and stuff? or do you want to make a track? make an EP? make an album?

Yes I want to work on sound design on everything (synths, basses, FX). My goals are to have a 10 track CD put together by the end of the summer, be signed to a label, and IMPROVE ALOT. (I understand that the 10 tracks might be a little too much)Climax wrote:Id your first step should be to SET GOALS so you know what you are trying to accomplish... then from there you can work on a schedule

creativity is about 10% of the process of writing. you can schedule time for the other 90.Comfi wrote:I don't know how well you can schedule creativity. Just do what feels right at the time brah. Tho you could try and do the tune-a-week thing.

while I admire your enthusiasm, I might take a step back and make some more acheivable goals... I mean, some people produce for years and dont get signed.. and 10 tracks? in 3 months? thats like 1 tune completely finished every 10 days lol
I would say maybe try to have a 3 track EP that REALLY delivers, 3 tracks that are awesome in every way that you really put effort into. that gives you LOTS of time to also work on your sound design and arrangement workflow etc...
and maybe not SIGNED, but at least get your music out to a bunch of outlets (set up and promote a facebook/youtube/soundcloud/etc) and send your EP to a few labels and see what kind of feedback you get...
just some ideas... im getting ready for a mad summer of production as well

Well what I mean is I just want to get some of the tracks on the EP/CD signed to a label not necessary get myself signed to a label if you know what I mean. And yeah, I know these goals are high but that's what goals are for right??Climax wrote:while I admire your enthusiasm, I might take a step back and make some more acheivable goals... I put together a production schedule for myself a few months back where I work in 2-3, 3 hour shifts a day, taking an hour or so in between them. Helps keep me focused. And you can completely schedule creativity. If you sit back and wait for gold to strike you, you'll be waiting for a long, long time. I actually find I do my best work when I'm completely spent/clueless and I just dive in and grind it out. It's kind of like running.

I very much agree with this, sure.. make 10 full songs but pick out the ones that really stand out and have a really great release. Unless you are a really quick worker and gets songs basically done within a few days and can whack out 15-20 songs i'd say don't try aim for 10 to stick on a CD. 10 tracks as a goal would be good, 10 tracks ready to put out there.. maybe not.
Also being signed, i wouldnt stick that as a goal either. Try to get signed by all means, but as a goal in a time period it probably isn't wise. If you have goals like that which you really want to complete within the 3 months you may end up compromising as you get closer and closer to the deadline. Its a good thing to work towards and try to happen but i wouldn't make it a goal so to speak.
I'm starting to produce over the summer (started a few days ago actually).. got an oxygen 25 january but only just started using it, just playing around atm. I have no real goals over the summer although i'd like to have at least one full track finished.. i won't be overly annoyed if i haven't as i know the start is getting to know the program/plug ins and all the features. I am finding it a bit tedious already because i have so many ideas but i can't get them down as i have no idea what i'm doing yet. I also want to re-learn the piano, after playing for 4 years then giving up and remembering NOTHING i'm really regretting stopping.. luckily my brother has been playing for years and years and is going uni next year to study music, in particular to do with like film music and stuff.. so he can help me get back to speed with playing.
I've decided to try producing because of how difficult it is to get anywhere just DJing and i love the idea of being able to cut my own music to dubplate and be the only person to have them.. even if they are shit i just like the thought of that exclusivity. Thats why im attracted to vinyl as a DJ as well. I also like the idea of swapping tunes with other producers/djs.

Well i usuaully scrap a track for parts if I don't like it or I just straight up move on. I just want to have 10 solid tracks that i really like.Muncey wrote: I very much agree with this, sure.. make 10 full songs but pick out the ones that really stand out and have a really great release. If you think you are intermediate you are a beginner. Nothing wrong with that. One tune a week thread. Step your game up.

Re: Summer Production!!!!!!! shhheeeiiiiiit
I think it's odd to have a production schedule. there are times when I don't feel like making beats or writing music. during those times I don't make music, but I would imagine my concentration and focus would not be on production. just try and produce whenever you feel like it. if you're trying to schedule out tasks for production, you might not have a solid work flow going for you
tl;dr
a schedule isn't going to get you to pump out tracks week after week. produce when you wanna produce. simple as that
