Need help adding some punch to my tunes...

Post by willzy » Fri May 18, 2012 11:47 pm

I've been experimenting with dubstep for a while but it seems like even though I can make decent sounds with synths, theres always some punch missing. I would like to know what I can add to my tunes to make them more punchy and such. Heres my soundcloud profile so you can understand what I mean: http://soundcloud.com/ketchupmustardrelish

I`m hearing no sub bass in any of your tracks, kind of the focal point in a lot of dubstep!

Lol @Attila's comment

But for real, compression when used correctly and EQ can help get more punch :W:

if used correctly, parallel will work very well with drums to add punch

Add sub/ turn it up, Eq right so theres room for kick and snare, and parallel compress drums. Thats a good point to start. Ok the best starting point is to use good samples.

Edit:
I listened a couple of ur tracks and it feels like the synths are drowning ur drums so eq is a good point to start. Also maybe turning the synths down a bit. Just my opinion

Well im going to be honest. From a musical point of view your song are horrible. Dubstep uses a lot of miner notes but musicly it still works and the notes sounds good together, you should work on that.

You sound design is just as bad. There are clashing frequency in your midrange bass sounds that need to be EQed out. Also dubstep normal has a low crunchy/buzzy sound on the midrange bass sounds, try going for that.

Your kick drum needs more sub bass and try layering a sub on your bass sounds.

And for god sake learn about keys, scales and arpeggios.

-Mixdown!
-Try to get a better balance of the drums and bass volume wise.
-Use a separate sub layer, and high-pass other parts of the "bass".
-Try to keep frequencies and volume in control, in your "reworked nonsense" tune, there's actually more subbass and higher overall volume in the intro, than after the drop! Also Compression, EQ and what others said!

Have fun learning!

Generally speaking you can't just have a magic ingredient to make things sound 'punchier' it's all dependant on source material, with that said though I find distortion almost alwwaayayyssssss makes things sound more punchier / aggressive :6:

the multiband transient shaper in izotope alloy is a really nice way of adding punch to drums.
