Re: Mexican Drug Cartels... wtf
There's a study this one Mexican journalist did where he tracked the correlation between large drug busts by the Mexican police and military, and reports of violence. Every time a large bust went down, or one of the cartel leaders captured/killed, the senseless violence would just get worse. Ridiculous. And then there's the whole debacle Eric holder caught himself in... I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I were him.tyger wrote:violence in mexico has escalated massively since president calderon "militarized" the drug war ... 40,000 murders or so since then.
on the plus side: mexico now has the world's largest mass movement aiming at ending prohibition. which is the only real solution.
Re: Mexican Drug Cartels... wtf
That whole business with the ATF giving them guns was truly a WTF moment.

apart from being a step towards ending prohibition everywhere?noam wrote:thats all very well and good but what use is ending prohibition in Mexico when they export most of their drugs ??
not sure exactly how it would play out, but it would have to help with reducing the violence in mexico. for one thing, some of violence is carried out by the police, who can get away with anything if it's an anti-narcos opertation.

Essentially, the value of drugs is driven up to massive massive levels because of prohibition, therefore profit and gain goes up, along with violence to fight for the share of the market.
Interestingly enough, drug consumption doesn't change dramatically with cost. If drug prices go up, people will find the money to fuel the addiction. Drug use also stays relatively static regardless of it's illegality. From a legal perspective, regardless of if people are using drugs at the same rate, if legalising reduces crime, violence and the profit available to criminals, the fact that the drugs are still being used is negligible in comparison to the benefits. Also, with less money being spent on a stale-mate war against the drugs, more money could be put towards helping communities tackle a drug problem.
From Cown and Tabarrok - Modern Principles of Economics
"The more effective prohibition is at raising costs, the greater are drug industry revenues. So, more effective prohibition means that drug sellers have more money to buy guns, pay bribes, fund the dealers, and even research and develop new technologies in drug delivery (like crack cocaine). It’s hard to beat an enemy that gets stronger the more you strike against him or her."

Drug sellers invented crack cocaine? That's rich!

Just because you are a character, does not mean you have character.

Re: Mexican Drug Cartels... wtf
Its a fucking shame... Forgot the death count of how many dead last year but it was in the tens of thousands for northern Mexico. If most Americans stopped being idiots and just fully legalized weed this would not be as big of a problem.

Re: Mexican Drug Cartels... wtf
It hasn't always been like this though. Years back I used to go to new mexico every year. On the last couple days of the trip we would stay in el paso and take a daytrip into juarez and it wasn't that bad. Don't get me wrong, it was poor as hell, ie kids selling chiclets on the streets for money; but it certainly wasn't anything like this.pkay wrote:Told you a while back Juarez is the most dangerous place on earth. Re: Mexican Drug Cartels... wtf
Totally wasn't. In high school we'd go on weekend journeys to Juarez to get scripts of Xanax and vallium and bring back camel packs filled with liquid ketamine. But since 2004 you're an idiot to leave Texas
