It takes a while to get on because of the massive increase in players,

New problem: After it has all loaded I am returned to the server select screen. Looks like it doesn't want me to play.

So far I have:
got both copys of arma 2 (main and operation arrowhead)
downloaded all the dayZ mod files
extracted them to a folder in arrowhead (@dayz/Addons)

then I get the problem above. :(

Yeah, games are way too big these days. Prey was only 1.7GB and 12 total files! Amazing game as well... devs need to take note.

What I plan on doing is using ARMA2 free which is 950MB.
Then buying Arrowhead which is only 7GB.
DayZ is a small download.

I've also seen the retail Arrowhead DVD on ebay for only a bit more than the download in case your download speed can't handle 7GB+.

Might want to try that, only downside is you can't play the ARMA2 singleplayer or have HD textures. My current system can't handle the HD version anyway haha. I used to play ARMA and singleplayer, but did not love it enough to play it much so no loss there for me.

Here's a guide I found to get it working with ARMA2 Free (huge pic): http://i.imgur.com/l7jG1.jpg

Got it running at 1028 x 768, looks like a game from the early 2000s but at fairly constant frame-rate at least. Might try overclocking my graphics card

Managed to get on! Lasted exactly 5 minutes. It was pitch black, i could hear them but not see them. That's when they started to attack, I unloaded a clip towards them, the brief flashes of light illuminating a huge horde. I was done for. Can't wait to play in the light.

Yeah it's the inventory which confuses me...also got a significant amount of motion blur (yes, I've set the 3D settings to the same res as my monitor).

Died twice so far. :( Sad times...

just turn it off. And vsync.

For anyone wondering, the way I did it is thusly...

1) download arma 2 free (then run it once)
2) download operation arrowhead (then run it once)
3) crate a folder in the operation arrowhead folder (found in program files/steam/steamapps/common - or something) called @dayZ, then a folder in that called Addons
4) install the mod files in this addons folder
5) Go to the Arma 2 free folder in steamapps, and copy the folder called "addons"
6) paste this folder into the main operation arrowhead folder
7) then I copied the mod files into this new addons folder aswell

Then I was off!

Then I wasnt. My graphics card kept wigging out hard. Getting massive (non game) video glitches. Last night though I opened my machine up and took the card out for the first time since I installed it years ago, and the fan was literally caked in smoke tar + dust, coating the whole thing in like a cm of thick sticky fuckery. Had run a temperature test just before, and the thing was getting over 100c. The game was running fine for like 20 seconds, then wigging out when it was overheating. Just about to try it again now. Had a quick play last night, and it seemed to run ok for alot longer, but I think it might still be dieing a bit. I thrashed the shit out of this graphics card...im an idiot. Might just get a new one. Any recommendations for a budget of £50?
