natural sleep aides
someone told me to try melatonin. does it work? any other suggestions?
Yeah, melatonin works for me. It's not super strong, which is nice cause there's not really any side effects, other than sometimes more intense dreams. Insomnia sucks.

Hop pillow
Lavender pillow
hot chocolate drink
a small scotch or brandy
test match cricket (even if you like it)
not sleeping during the day
make sure have excercise each day
hot bath or shower before you go to sleep
Don't eat too late
try to stop thinking about stuff when you lie down to sleep
if you come back from the club after 6am, stay up and have a nice early night the next day, should put you back on track, works for me
failing all that become a sound engineer it's part of the job requirement I should know (52 hr session anyone?...and that's working people not cracking out the yayo)
hope this is of some help: from a fellow sufferer

Melatonin will knock you out for sure, but if you don't get the dose right there'll be a dopamine spike about 3-4 hours after taking it and you'll wake up even more unable to sleep than before.
Adding to what was said in this thread - http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=10607 - there's an herb called Gotu Kola which is good for relaxation. It won't make you sleepy, but it'll help you relax so you can sleep. Also seems to help you sleep in longer. You can find it in most health food stores; Solaray is a good brand.

Yeah i've heard of Gotu Kola, never tried it myself. Kava Kava works wonders, and i would personally not believe the negative hype surrounding it. From what i've read, you have to take a lot of it to cause liver damage. As far as melatonin goes it works for me, but i've got a friend who tried taking it and it gave him horrible nightmares, so results may vary. The thing with herbs and herbal remedies is that you really have to experiment on yourself to find what works for your body, as herbs are more subtle than the monstrous OTC and prescription medications we're used to.
another thing, research brands when you research an herb that your interested in. Herbal medicine is currently not very highly regulated, and some brands will contain only a fraction of an herbs active chemicals in a typical dosage in relation to another, more potent brand.
if you do the footwork and figure out which works for you herbal medicine is great, but you have to put some effort into it.
Oh, i've never had the kava kava tea, but the capsules kick ass. I think i was just using vitamin shoppe brand but i bought a mixture that was guranteed to have a certain amount of kavalactones in each dose. the important thing with herbal medicine, again, is making sure your getting the same amount of the active ingredient in every pill.
yeah.
