Making a dubstep remix in Reason
Hey i've got an idea for a dubstep remix on an old fifties song. I've never done it before and i;m reletively new to reason so how should I go about this i don't know where to start. I'm guessing NN19 sampler but I dont have much experience with the device any help would be appreciated thanks

Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
What exactly are you trying to ask? Do you not know how to do anything in reason? Why don't you start there?
Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
What version of reason are you using? If 6 (which I highly doubt) you can drop the wav right into the sequencer

Try Recycle too...
if you find a thin section in the song where it's only drums or something make yourself a rex loop.
you can go to a Kong trigger pad and pull up the 'nurse rex loop sampler' and chop it up as you see fit.
in slice or chunk trigger mode you enable more than one slice so that multiple triggers of that pad will alternate between the slices, giving your drums a more realistic feel, plus you can get super creative with it.
I personally think it's a pain in the ass to throw wav files into the NNXT or NN-19 sampler to work with them. Haven't really bothered to figure out the technical aspects of it. Waitin' on Reason 6 to arrive so I can make wav files a breeze.
oh, and it's probably already occurred to you, but if you haven't, search up an accapella of the tune for clean vox.

Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
Im no reason expert but i'm gettin the hang of it. I'm using reason 5. I just want some advice on the best place to start in making a remix in the context of reason 5. I've been learning how to make my own original shit, just never attempted a remix.
Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
I mite be totally wrong but reason to me just doesnt seem like a good program to make remixes with I also have abelton but I find reason to be more creatively inspiring but maybe for remixes i'd rather use ableton (which I truly dont know anything about).
Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
What makes you say that? Reason is an amazing piece of software if you take the time to learn it

Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
I've been wondering this myself, not in the context of reason, but in general.
What's the fundamentals to remixing a song? I'm sure it's something you can learn by yourself with time and patience, but what's the basic way to go about it?
Any tips?

Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
I see people on youtube who's original songs are poor quality making decent sounding dubstep remixes but it seems to me like its harder
Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
mind giving an example? just clear things up a remix is when you have the original stems, a bootleg is when you grab the full version and edit that...so knowing that are you doing a bootleg or a remix?

I meant that I've ordered Reason 6 and it's coming in the mail. I can understand the confusion with how I phrased that.ehbrums1 wrote:Reason 6 has been out since October.....MoonUnit wrote:Try Recycle too...

Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
If your lucky you can get the "stems" of the original,, clean recordings of the vocals , drums , guitars.
Then you would want to go about "time stretching" them to your remix tempo (140bpm from the original 121bpm for example)
If its an old 50's song then you might not be able to find them and bootleging it would be the option. Filtering and heavy use of eq to try and get it so you just have the vocal audiable.)
( or what alot of "lazy" remixs do is just get a clean bit of vocal and put that into your track) (try taking some vocals at the intro or the breakdown where there arnt many other instruments playing)
Ideally you would want to cut out the kicks and snares then layer them with samples more contempory (deeper subby kick and reverbed snare for example) , cut out the vocal maybe put some effects on that.
As mentioned above, Dr.Rex would be good as once put into slices the Dr.Rex player will automatically timestretch to fit.
I would suggest using the NNXT, at the bottom left is a arrow you can click to expand it, and in the expanded section is a folder icon, here you can load in your .wav file (the browser icon at the main looks for .nnxt patchs)
also as suggested before id suggest just learning how to make songs first. A good quote from Alix Perez was that if the track sounds good enouth on its own, adding a vocal will only make it better.. where as trying to get a tune written around a vocal can be tricky. ) just an opinion.
out of curiosity what tune? if your wanting to share ofc xD

Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
It might not even be a good idea but I was thinkin "i only have eyes for you" wit some sub bass and some wobbles might sound kinda big. Just goin by ear it sound pretty close to 140 bpm too
Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
the flammingos? from the sound of it,, id start by bootleging it... just get the song,,, cut out some pieces. Theres a nice "good love" vocal with a stab on it, could use that.
Also Midi files for some songs make great remix starter points.. and are quite fun if your trying to figure out synth, i think its nice to have good notes playing and then tweaking a synth.
also a quick good says this song is 58 bpm ...

Re: Making a dubstep remix in Reason
That is another thing:
Fitting things to the BPM you want (140 for instance) How to go about this the right way? (If there is a right way) Any tips from anyone who's done this before?
Cheers
