FM8 Tutorials
I'm not really even looking well enough, but does anyone know of any tutorials out there of FM8 that aren't "Skrillex Growl" tutorials or "Dubstep Wobble" shit. I really just want to look at FM8 good enough before I buy it (yeah I said buy. I have a shitty job, but I get enough to spend it on some luxuries).
Or any producers that use FM8 and do streams and shit that have archived videos. That will also help. Or if anyone else uses FM8 and wouldn't mind dropping an PM sometime to help me learn it.

Re: FM8 Tutorials
When I was really focusing on learning FM8 like 4 months back, I realized that I was much better off reading material on synthesis in general because that basic additive method of making sounds is pretty much exactly the same as it was 50 years ago. Most kids just getting into music now don't really have the attention span to commit and learn it either because it's such a potentially expansive process. I agree with Deadly though, try to find a manual for the DX7 and work your way through it. And hop right in to the expert panel too, don't waste time with the other easy morph sections and all that til you have a basic understanding of what's going on. It's by far my favorite synth to work in though, it's super rewarding to create a sound from scratch and you can almost always bank on the fact that you'll end up with something ridiculous.
Re: FM8 Tutorials
Haha, it's true most of these new producers are little kids with their torrented massive who don't want to actually learn anything. They just want to make "dirty wobbles" and show their friends.Attila wrote:When I was really focusing on learning FM8 like 4 months back, I realized that I was much better off reading material on synthesis in general because that basic additive method of making sounds is pretty much exactly the same as it was 50 years ago. I will go read much into Frequency Modulation. Since it's a whole new thing to me I will wait a little bit before turning random knobs in FM8.
I also found this channel on youtube that has a few informative tutorials. And I'd like to share it.

Unfortunately there is one or two "dubstep wobble" videos in there but the other are pretty intriguing.

What? Because I'm pushing off anything that refers to basses as "wobbles". Damn fucking right I am. I will never affiliate myself with that cancer.Coolschmid wrote:What are you, a fucking hipster or something?ephyks wrote: Unfortunately there is one or two "dubstep wobble" videos in there but the other are pretty intriguing.

Now fuck right off.

Re: FM8 Tutorials
Question; can you modulate the level that one operator modulates another? For instance on the matrix, if you have D modulating F by 40, can you create an envelope so the parameter goes from 0 to 40?
Having a nosey at the manual and it just gives a vague confirmation that you can without expressing how.

Re: FM8 Tutorials
I haven't tried, but couldn't you automate it from 0-40 instead? Might not be as much control as an fm8 envelope, but it should get the job done.
Re: FM8 Tutorials
yeah probably but id rather it be on key input. it can be achieved through the morph function but it seems excessive, and id prefer the control of an envelope.

Having a nosey at the manual and it just gives a vague confirmation that you can without expressing how.
The beauty of FM synthesis is being able to modulate the amp of a modulator oscillator so that it changes the timbre of the carrier oscillator.
Fm8 allows you to do so by using the respective envelopes accessible when selecting the oscillator of choice. This can also be achieved in the mod section by applying a LFO.
My biggest suggestion is learning how to program the envelope, at first you will notice how sensitive the values are. This might deter you from exploring it initially, but once you can manage, you will notice how much expression is at your finger tips.
Also, if you use a controller vst ( I use FL's keyboard controller ) you can assign the wave form to the velocity of a note. This is crucial for emulating vowels /chest cavities.
All the best!
