Everyone on this board looks like they enjoy drugs though. And that's not an unpopular opinion.

yes they are, fak uNilsFG wrote:Mala: "some tunes are better when they are just memories" no they aren't.
i'm about to get really pretentious but whatever, this is how i feel.
my favorite tune ever - stand against war... ever since i've heard it, it's been my favorite. living in southern california, i sort of accepted the fact that i'd never get to hear it live. i figured i'd have to be happy with that one cut of it out of scuba's sub:stance mix. then luckily enough, goth trad was booked to play here, and OUT OF NOWHERE, he drops it. i hear the first note of the flute coming in and i knew it was actually happening, even though i was in shock. the next three minutes were one of the best moments of my life to this day. anytime i think back to it, i get chills running up and down my spine as well as goosebumps all over.
that tune is immensely special to me... and i know that if it were just out there, easily available, it wouldn't be the same. you said yourself when you were talking about ruffhouse: " it just lost a bit of its value if you know what I mean." if i could just listen to it whenever i wanted, it would diminish the intensity of that moment in my mind. i don't even allow myself to listen to that mix cut anymore because that moment is so special to me.
i definitely agree with that though. but doing so really goes against the point of "true" dubplate culture anyways. if it's being rinsed like crazy and no longer being kept as exclusive as it should be, then it basically has the same effect as being released. if mala started putting stand against war in every mix, playing it in every set, and handing it out to every dj he knows, then yeah, i'd get bored of it too (and that's saying a lot).holding it back for like a year, then rinsing it to death and then releasing it when everyone's already sick of it is just pure fucking stupid imo.
Yeah, it's not fair, but that's just how it is. And this is coming from someone who lives somewhere where the dubstep scene (aside from brostep) is next to non existent. There's probably 4 or 5 decent DJs booked a year, and I can't even go to see them 90% of the time because they're all at 21+ venues. I can't even list all the tunes that I am dying to hear, but know I never will. And I'd still rather have it this way than being able to just have any tune I want freely"Oh but if you want to hear their tunes you just got to go to their shows!"
^^^I fucking hate it when people say that too. It's not because you live close to london or any other big city in the UK and you can check out big producers and dj's every weekend other people can.
Re: Post your unpopular opinions.. NSFW
You raise some good points but I'm not going to change my opinion
Also, don't know if this really is an unpopular opinion but: Addison Groove was fun in the beginning but I think it's time for new Headhunter material.
Was listening to some Headhunter tunes this morning. I miss that smooth sound of his so fucking much!
He once told me he might release this tune himself on some kind of unreleased tunes compilation. That was 2 years ago. I still want this tune soooooo much.

I agree, now would be a good time for Headhunter to make a return. I think he's firmly set as Addison Groove for the meantime however.

There's just way too much 808 abuse out there these days. All you hear is that 808 bass drum with other stuff on top of it.
2 years ago it was cool and special, now it's just "meh another 808 tune".

I'll be honest I never paid the geto boys much attention but that's largely because I followed different trens in hip hop but from what little I recall their stuff was different enough.kidshuffle wrote: NWA is overrated though. I love Cube and Dre, and NWA played a huge part of my childhood...but the Geto Boys were doing the exact same thing, but released their first album 6 months before Straight Outta Compton. Plus they have 8 albums, with 4 being good, compared to 2, with only one being decent.
NWA's Straight Outta Compton caught the Zeitgeist others had contributed to. Erik B and Rakim released Paid in Full 6 months before It Takes a Nation of Millions but it doesn't detract from the Public Enemy record.
A lot of 80's & early 90's hip hop sounds dated but I think it's hard to appreciate it's impact and importance without placing it in some type of historical context and Straight Outta Compton was massive. Kind of like you needed to be there which I'm guessing you may have been but others calling NWA wouldn't have been. Mc Ren's delivery was boss as well.

Re: Post your unpopular opinions.. NSFW
i got no huge problem with people releasing vinyl only or keeping tunes as dubplates. if people released every tune they had the market would be saturated and nothing would sell. and following music isn't just about buying the tunes, even if you are unlucky enough to live somewhere where you can't go see DJs all the time. i mean i get the sense that what you're talking about is just a natural progression, the tracks that get spun change, the music evolves, old stuff gets left behind. dubplate culture is meant to prevent everyone rinsing a tune to death.. but you do get the feeling it's more about having this sort of chosen few who have the rare tunes, who are "in" and not "out", than about the music. im not sure i like that tbh. that loefah quote upthread pretty much says that, and i get where he's coming from, it's about an entire culture and way of doing things, but this is not the early 90's, you do have the internet, you don't always have to dig so much. i can't help thinking trying to keep that is a hopeless task... *shrug*

It was pretty disappointing at system compared to tracks like ruffage and mud, still a good track though.g.dot wrote:I find the goat stare boring.

Yeah the impact was huge, but the point still stands that they only had one good album, and tbh some of the cuts on there are pretty lame lol.scspkr99 wrote: A lot of 80's & early 90's hip hop sounds dated but I think it's hard to appreciate it's impact and importance without placing it in some type of historical context and Straight Outta Compton was massive. i meant really heavy shit. heroin, shit like that.
i dont get that impression at all from this board. it seems mostly weed + alcohol, with the occasional coke and psychadelic venture
