Distortion inside of massive.

Post by Dankstep » Tue Jun 12, 2012 10:51 pm

Okay so i'm really confused, I was always under the impression that for the crazy vowely brostep bass sounds, that most of the time you're gonna have some distortion in your fx chain after your synth (in this case lets say you're using massive).

But then I hear this dudes tracks http://soundcloud.com/rekoil and he's got HUUUUGE sounds. And if you read on the right of his soundcloud page he says this.

"Currently using Logic Pro 9 with NI Massive for the basses (no distortions outside of Massive) "

How the fuck is he getting that kind of distortion PURELY within massive? I know there's sample and hold, but other than that wtf could he be doing? Or is he lying...

There's sample and hold, bitcrusher, sine and parabolic shapers, brauner tube, tele tube and classic tube. These are all forms of distortion, my friend.

In all honesty, his basses don't sound like anything too difficult to reproduce. Sounds to me like he's making extensive use of Massive's tube distortions, and probably a bit of parabolic shaping. The sounds are fairly basic, they just sound great because his basslines are well programmed and the tunes themselves are relatively well mixed.

Ahh I see, I guess a lot of it also has to do with the routing. Appreciate it, time to experiment.

You can get all the distortion you need out of the modulation oscillator and the sine shapers.

Its FM synthesis.

What's FM synthesis? (im not literally asking what the definition of FM synthesis is, i'm asking what you're referring to). I'm a bit confused because i know massive isn't FM.

I find that putting a lot of distortion after your filter sound a bit crap. You can rally mash a sound up with the sine shaper if you rout it before the filter.

I find that using the parabolic shapers really help make gritty sounds. Just my .02 though

In the MOD osc you can select an OSC for FM

They sound like the same patches edited different ways, and not really basses more just synths which is easier to get away with using distortion since you can safely add harmonics without worrying too much about losing lower frequency content.

But why would you directly believe what he says? Not saying he's lying or it's impossible mind you.
It's definitely possible with the routing in massive, and especially the inserts. It could also be the same patches layered in multiple instances each with different/more effects.

Tbh I'd recommend against only using Massive just because someone else says they do. That's no doubt why they all sound the same-ish. Definitely make use of outside processors.

Well I just like the dudes sounds, like the ones in Solid Soul by him are pretty sick. I usually use camelcrusher. But atleast if i'm using distortion within massive i can route it and have it running before the filter and things like that. I'm glad I asked.
