Best bet would certainly be to get an interface mate, honestly it's so worth it. You don't want to be running your pc's soundcard because its most probably shit like most peoples.

A soundcard will make your life alot easier
Re: Quick question about monitors.
Get the alesis I02 interface which plugs into your computer via USB. You can then run the audio from the computer, through the interface, out to the monitors. That particular interface is very small, cheap, and has 2 XLR inputs.. L and R

Re: Quick question about monitors.
An external soundcard will give you less latency which allows you to use a MIDI controller effectively, you'l also be using an ASIO driver for the audio which will eat less CPU

Re: Quick question about monitors.
I have a Saffire Scarlett, it works great, focusrite makes really good interfaces:

Re: Quick question about monitors.
I plug my Krk RP6's into my headphone jack using a converter. I only do this because I lost my firewire cable to hook up my firepod and use it as my audio interface. It WILL work fine, but IMO it will sound better if you get an external soundcard and plug them in correctly.
My latest WIP (Feedback is GREATLY appreciated)

Re: Quick question about monitors.
You could buy used. In my experience interfaces rarely die. I've used the same one for 5 years.
Re: Quick question about monitors.
Are you only going to use them for only monitors.... If not try looking for something with more I/O s
