Curing the Common Cold

Post by hifi » Sat Jun 16, 2012 9:06 pm

just recently caught the common cold (indeed, during summertime) and I planned on doing a 4/5 mile hike uphill w/ a few buddies of mine, one which i have not seen in years and planned this out weeks ago. but i feel like shit and very uncomfortable. from your guys' experiences how did you get rid of / cure the common cold when you had been infected?

you can't.

All you can do is make the symptoms more bearable (cough medicines, throat sweets), drinking a lot of water is a good also, flush it out

If your throat isn't too torn up I like having a cheeky bifta when I've got a cold to lighten the mood. Sure it alleviates some symptoms, but reality is it probably makes them worse.

I'm fairly sure I spend a large amount of my life with a cold of some kind. Beechams all in one/max I find is the best medicine

I would take vitamin c, and eat garlic toast, (with a LOT of garlic)
Depending how bad I feel, I would start drinking hot toddies with loads of fresh lemon and whisky.
I wouldn't go for the walk if I felt bad.
I don't know how much any of this helps, but its what I do.

You can do it very easily.

Most importantly, always breathe through your nose. Even if you 'can't', just do it. Force it. Breathing through your mouth dries out your throat, furthering irritation. So breathing through your nose moisturizes your throat.
Steam a lot. Like at least 3 times per day, but try more, as much as you can. Get some of those drops or capsules that dissolve in hot water and.. steam.
Eat a lot of oranges and veggies. Vitamin C is important but as are any vitamins.

I use sports vitamins for my workouts, so I do a double or triple dose o ndays when I feel a cold coming up.

I don't get colds anymore because when I start feeling them come up, I do all this shit I mentioned and I only get some mild irritation.

My mee-ma would always make me sweat it out. 3 blankets, turn on the heater and sweat like a motherfucker. Next morning a good shower and I feel fresh as fuck

As mentioned before Hot Toddies are great, especially can help if your throat is scratchy as well.

When I start feeling sick I load up on zinc lozenges, usually the cold only lasts a couple days when I do this.

Sleep, water, fruit. In that order of importance.

Do nothing but sleep for like a day and they seem to be gone when you wake up

Fizzy vitamin C tablets (fuck Berorca, Sainsburys own brand is half the price), taken twice daily the first day I start feeling that tickle in the back of my throat that precedes having a cold.

This works every. single. time. I fuck you not. This has always gotten rid of my cold within a day or two.

Get a 2 litre bottle of water. Put 2 of those chunky vitamin C tablets in it. Drink 1 of those a day at least, but try more.

Relax, but don't stay in bed in the dark all day and night - as psychosomatically it'll make it worse.

That's it.
